Suggestions for "Wooden Flute Obsession" volume 4

Iain MacDonald (Glenuig)

How about flutistes in Brittany? There are so many and excellent players yet not famous among the anglophones.

I’d mentioned Jean-Luc Thomas for an earlier compilation, and was thinking of doing it here on this thread, but i think the focus of the WFO series is Irish trad. I suppose it might be a tough sell if one were to put more than one Breton player per release – the music hasn’t really caught on in the English-speaking world, at least the way ITM has.

Ah… I thought that “woodenflute obsession” was for any sort of music played by wooden flute… (though we can recognize the tunes played by modern flute)

In addition, there are some breton players (that is not applied to Sylvain Barou, hehehe but he plays breton and Irish extremely well) who plays also Irish tunes!!

By the ways, I bought the WFO 1 long ago, and I am looking forward to get special offers of WFO2+3+…

-Marcos LLope, flute player in the amazing band “Llan de Cubel” www.llandecubel.com

-Xurde Fernandez, very young and tremendoud player in Corquieu. Impresive.

Could I suggest Chris Corbett, a very musical and subtle player.

You know, sorry, but many of these names are starting to get unfamiliar to me (good, I hope). Could you send me a PM, email, or if appropriate an open message on the C&F board with more detail as to what might make the particular player special. Good tone, heavy or sparse ornamentation, tune interpretation or repertoire? In essence, some sort of hint as to why I might conceivably be caught pestering them.

Thanks,

Kevin Krell

Let’s see whether asking him directly has any effect.

Peter, I’ve been trying to reach Seamus Hynes, and gone so far as to send someone to his door. Left a voice mail for Mike Dyer, so try to stop him from packing his bags and leaving town. He can just call Martin O’Malley and make an appointment for some studio time.

Jerry Murphy from the band Rud Eile, in the Boston area. They just released their first CD. Some sound samples can be found on their website: http://rudeilemusic.com/

Rod Garnett, from Boulder/Wyoming?

Though Tommy Martin’s known as a piper, he’s a heck of a flute player.

And … wondering if Hammy Hamilton ever volunteered to contribute more than liner notes?

Aran Olwell? Asher Grey?

Kevin, here’s a Corquieu clip. Way too fast, and not the best of qualities, but you can have a look to Xurde’s playing. It might save lots of words

That speed is not certainly baby, but the flute playing really worths a listen.
Hope it helps
