Kevin, I see you have P.J. Crotty on this list. You might have a hard time getting him to record for you now, because sadly he died a couple of years ago. (Just a hunch, but this may have something to do with why you still have him marked as “unconfirmed”.)
Also, if you’re fortunate enough to find Pat Mahon and get him to agree to record for you, please just chuck all the other flute players you have lined up and do a full CD of Pat alone.
John,
PJ died a few months after my brother. I have been in touch with Angela about existing recordings. I suspect a track from
Happy to Meet" is more likely than a private recording. Apparently I first heard PJ Crotty in about 1975, playing whistle on Murray Head’s album “Say It Ain’t So” (which BTW has sold over a million copies).
You mentioned in a previous post that you were trying to get hold of Sheena Vallely and I notice she’s on your ‘tentative’ list - have you had any luck?
She’s my old tutor (and, I have to add, a truly awesome player!) and I still have a contact number for her.
Let me know if you need any further help getting hold of her and I’ll give her a call to see if she’s interested in getting involved in your next CD.
Only the names with asterisks “*” were unconfirmed. And many of those seemed interested, but conditional on hearing the existing CDs. Sheena agreed a little while ago.
I’m surprised nobody has ever mentioned Michael King from Tipperary (all-ireland champ on flute in 2004 as Michael Mac Conrai).
He really has a fantastic tone. I heard and saw him play on the Seize The Moment double CD and DVD playing (with his brother Padraig on the button accordion) a set of reels and a set of slides (these 2 sets were featured on a Comhaltas Live programme some time last year).
You can hear him here : http://www.rte.ie/radio1/ceilihouse/rams/2006/16december.smil (at about 44’) playing a set of polkas at Dolan’s in Limerick city (on this programme you can hear Kieran Munnelly too).
In his 2000 interview http://www.firescribble.net/flute/shannon.html with Brad, Gary Shannon was already thinking great of Michael.
