Suggestions for "Wooden Flute Obsession" volume 4

OK, might as well chime in.
For a list of artists on WFO1, 2 & 3, go to, respectively:
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO_CD.htm
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO2_CD.htm
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO3_CD.htm

Try to avoid duplication. I might try to get some fill-ins to complete WFO3.

I’ll start it off:

Brendan Carson [Co. Down]
James Carty [London]
Jamie Hamilton [Boston]
Kevin Ryan [Ennis]
Breandan O’Hare & Marie Rafferty (duet) [Belfast]

Kevin Krell

Kevin,

I’d suggest Dan Isaacson in Baltimore.

Brendan

Pat O’Gorman from Canada:

By the way, the Brian Pickell band is incredibly easy to listen to and he writes some really great tunes.

Linda Hickman
Brian Halloran (sp?)
Crystel Rice

David, funny you should mention Linda, as I will be meeting her for the first time in a week, she is going to host my session. Kevin if you are interested I could ask here in person.

On the off chance that suggesting them twice will help,

Phil Smillie

I also second the recommendation for Crystel Rice.

I would like to second the nominations for Pat O’Gorman (from Canada) and Brian Holleran (now from Chicago). Great flute players! Pat has extensive recording experience and Brian is working on a CD.
Paul

Very glad to see Jamey Hamilton on that list. Boyo has some savage ability (which he has had for awhile) and I’m glad that its being recognized for the recording. I also think his playing stylistically has taken a turn for the more trad (which isn’t a bad thing at all) since he hit beantown. Good for you Kevin, and rock on Jamey!

Rob

there is a CD called Geantrai The Music Makers. It is an excelent cd. On it is a women playing the flute and I believe her name is Muireann Amhiaoibh. Her father’s name is Feargal Mac Amhiaoibh. She would make a good addition I believe.

You mean Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh? She is the current singer in Danu and she also plays Flute/Whistle. I suggested her on Kevin’s thread at thesession.org it is the same topic in a different place.

Kevin, what’s the deal with mr. Ryan anyway? I haven’t had a chance to chat with him for a while now. Let me guess, touring like a mad man?
You should grab him by the ear and drag him down to the studio one of these days.

Yeah, An Eitre seems to have had a lot of activity, in Sweden and on the continent. Nearly every time I reached him by phone he was about to go on stage. My hand and his ear were never in the same room (nor could they be).

He missed the April 30th, 2005 session in Miltown Malbay (couldn’t reach Brid O’Donohue to coordinate the time slot), and so time was made for him to go down anytime (through the end of the year) at his convenience (and that of Martin O’Malley at the studio). Just never happened. He has promised something next time he goes in the studio with An Eitre, for WFO4.

Brad Hurley…
C’mon you guys.

I mentioned it to Brad about WFO3, and to send me a recent clip. I think he might be hoping for even greater “maturity” for any WFO4 timeframe.

Haven’t I tried to follow the suggestions from everyone in constructing the others? Just checking for current consensus, and where the search leads me.
An open process.

Kevin,
I think it would be a good idea to ask some of the players on WFO 1 who they think should be included on WFO IV. The accomplished players from WFO 1 would probably have a better idea of players who are too young to be widely known or older players who have never put themselves forward. I also think their judgement would be sounder than punters who recommend their favorite local hotshot.

I was in Martin O Malley’s a few weeks ago and heard Anthony Quigney recording there, may be worth looking into. You have Michael Hynes but what about the rest of the family, I have a tape of the brothers playing together and that is quite worth hearing.
I still think Mike Dyer should be pressurised out of his refusal to commit to this recording too.

Strongly agree with David by the way topical fluteplayers should be selected rather than just anyone who happens to be able to play the flute nicely.

This is exactly how it works, actually, no matter if it seems more openly democratic than that from what you see posted here. I get suggestions (and where possible contact info) from the WFO flute players, mix that in with the feedback from the students and punters as to whom they wish to hear. So some of the choices are based on solid recommendations by flute players who MUST surely know what they’re talking about, and then there’s some consensus building to see who salutes. Even then there are surprises (good & bad, I fear).

I called Martin and he was in with Anthony. I think he’s recording for Garry Shannon’s next CD (& was on WFO2). I presume you’re also talking about Seamus Hynes? As to Mike Dyer, what sort of pressure - I’ve asked for a phone # and didn’t get it. And I wasn’t aware he “refused” so much as changed the subject and avoided being asked directly. Should I start a petition drive on my website?
