Suggestions for a new tunebook

I am looking to buy a new tunebook and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions. I am pretty much open to anything, as of now I only have Bill Och’s tutorial.

Try A Dossan of Heather. It’s great, with good tunes, a different style of playing and a cd to play along with. Lots of fun. I love it.

Second the motion! Approachable tunes, not too much ornamentation, nice CD to match.

What kind of music are you looking for? Irish music? if so: Popular session tunes? Slow airs? Song book w/ lyrics and guitar chords?

A Dossan of Heather is a collection of Irish tunes, but much less known ones that won’t get you started in a session, if that’s what you’re looking for. Also consider whether you want a book that has tunes you’ll find on professional cd recordings. A popular session collection would be your best bet there.

If you’re new to Irish music, a book that has an accompanying cd is a good idea. Look at the selection at The Whistle Shop or Shanna Quay.

Irelands 101 best tinwhistle tunes, Vincent Brodricks Turoe Stone collection, Irelands 101 best session tunes, and more. These are really good collections.

I like the Ossian “red book” and “green book” collections, both entitled “Ceolte Seisuin na hEireann”.

They have a good collection of common familiar tunes along with some uncommon tunes as well, and have good settings that are very sparsely ornamented so that you don’t have to go guessing about what the melody is really supposed to be.

There’s L. E. McCullough’s “121 Session Tunes,” available at Mike Burke’s site:

I would also suggest Cathal McConnell’s Irish Pennywhistle book; mine came with 3 cassette tapes; perhaps by now, cd is available with the tune book. Nice assortment of tunes at various levels and a pleasure to hear Cathal play them at moderate and then full speed as well some instruction re basic ornamentation.
