Any Star Trek T.N.G. fans out there? I recall an episode when Captain Pickard was zapped by an alien probe and lives out another man’s life on an alien planet while unconscious. Pickard learns to play what I believe was a Penny Whistle while living out this other life. He played a specific tune with this whistle on this episode. Does anyone know the name of this tune or where I can find it? ![]()
Hi, Grover, and welcome! ![]()
That episode was called The Inner Light. I think the song is on one of the ST soundtrack CDs, but I don’t know which one – it would say ‘The Inner Light’ on it.
I’ve only been playing for about a month and a half, but that was the second song I worked out on the whistle. It’s probably the easiest thing I know of to play. I’m sure I’m probably missing a few notes here and there, since it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that episode, but if no one else (i.e., more experienced!
) here has anything better, I can try to write out the notes for you in a PM, using the ‘number system’, if you’re familiar with that (i.e., 1 means you cover two hole, 2 means you cover one holes, etc…) I’ll be around tomorrow if you want to send me a PM, and I should be able to get to it then!
Again, it wouldn’t be perfect, but it’s a pretty good starting off point… ![]()
Hope that helps some! ![]()
Take care,
Michele
The name of the tune is “The Resikan Flute” It is also one of my first tunes learned. I just went out and grabbed the MIDI file of it and jammed it through Finale. If you PM me with an email address I will send you a .pdf of the piece. I even left the cool harmony in the arrangement so you can play along with a friend. ![]()
Best of luck!

Hey! Don’t be stingy! Share with the rest of us! I onced ABCed the entire song The Coombe because I couldn’t find it anywhere on the net, only to find out later that If I just would have asked around I wouldn’t have had to work through all those notes ![]()
Justin
I’ll second that!!
There’s a midi file of it here, apparently:
And I think this is the dots and scratches??
Finally…a subject on whistle playing I know something about!
The tune is Inner Light, from the episode of the same name.
The author is Jay Chattaway who has done many of the Star Trek pieces including the Voyager theme.
If you belong to one of the file sharing programs like Kazaa or WinMX, try to find the version of the tune done by Jay Chattaway and his 12 year old daughter. He’s on piano and she plays whistle.
It’s the best version in my opinion. The version with the full orchestra is really beautiful too.
If you go with a MIDI, get it in D. All the free sheet music that I’ve seen floating around has it written in G. Not the original key. The original is D.
The best sheet music that I’ve seen is available through musicnotes.com
search for MN0040299. Will cost you about $5 US.
Some where on the main site Dale has provided a link to a site with even more info that includes photos of Capt. Picard playing the whistle/flute.
Warning: to play this is in the key of D, you need a whislte that can handle those high notes. My Sindt is perfect for this piece. I actually sold a Burke Pro Session because it hurt my ears to play sustained high notes on it for this tune.
Live long and prosper. May the force be with you. Nanu nanu.
Mike
I have a copy of sheetmusic in D that I can email you.

Oops. Mine’s actually in G. Sorry.
Okay, I took the plunge and spent the $4.95 to downlaod the sheet music.
But wait…there’s more.
Musicnotes.com also has a free download for a player that once you have downlaoded your sheet music, it will play the tune on your computer so you can follow along.
But wait…there’s more.
The player has the ability to increase or decrease the tempo.
So for $4.95 I got the sheet music and a player program.
Cheap…works well…I’m happy.
That is all.

I saw that one…Is he playing a Copeland?
No. the mystery of the whistle is longstanding. There is a report on the main C&F site.
um, ya… that’s not really what I have heard of this piece. Close but no cigar.
Scott

My apologies to whoever it was I nicked this from. I thought it was funny, and I still do.
