The Flavor of the Month was written by Brendan Callahan, a great fiddler who grew up near Washington DC, where he was a student of Brendan Mulvihill, and who now lives in Philadelphia. I know Brendan was quite chuffed when Win Horan started playing his tune at Solas gigs, and he’s probably over the moon now that it’s actually on one of their recordings. Maybe I’ll have to relax my own personal boycott on buying Solas recordings and get this one myself…
Well, it IS a great recording! Besides, it’s on two of their recordings: this Live DVD, and a CD release called “the Hour before Dawn”.
I am not too sure which recording to prefer, but the set on the DVD is such a blazing performance altogether, that if you have a DVD player you should get it..
I have actually only heard Solas recordings of this tune - but I would expect it to sound slightly different frm any other
Speaking of such - if you can; have a listen to Egan’s version of “Fermoy Lasses” on the same DVD track…yipes
Ah, is it? Which one of his solo albums do you like best?
I got the one called “traditional music from ireland” or smth like that..
Not spectacular, but nice if you want to pick some flute tunes.
On that record, it is easier to recognize them than on many other of Egan’s recordings Not that I mind at all.
BTW, this is the status so far:
Paddy Taylor’s
X (box, Mick)
Fermoy Lasses (flute, Seamus)
Flavour of the month (fiddle, G minor, Winifred)
Esther’s reel
Toss the Feathers (all play)
I sent an email to Solas; not that I expect an answer
Cheers;
Eivind
It’s on “A Week In January”. It might be the only flute track on the album, I don’t remember for sure. The “Trad Music of Ireland” album is probably my favorite, but I listen to his stuff more for the banjo than for the flute (don’t tell anyone).
Hey guys,
Flavor of the Month IS a great Brendan Callahan tune, and while Win did record it on the Hour Before Dawn album, it is NOT the tune she plays as a solo on the Solas Live! DVD. That tune is one of her own compositions, titled (Win is big on imagination) “Win’s G minor reel”. She recorded it on her “Pleasures of Home” album which is available exclusively at Cracker Barrel restaurants. The full set is: Paddy Taylor’s/The Tartar Frigate/Fermoy Lasses/Win’s G minor/Esther’s/Toss the Feathers
Cheers!
Well, the easiest way was to ask Win herself;) But, like I said her G minor tune is on her “Pleasures of Home” album (available from many fine Cracker Barrels everywhere (Cracker Barrel is my favorite chain restaurant btw). I found the name for Mick’s solo as the tune is also on Nomos’s first recording. Cheers!
