Well, wonderful music isn’t OT here at any time, I guess…it’s just that this group is vocal, not instrumental. Someone on the IGT turned me on to this small a capella group from Wisconsin – Navan is their name – and I just took delivery of their two CDs. They are absolutely marvelous! Beautiful traditional airs sung in Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and Breton in stunning four-part harmony. My favorite is the first CD, An Cuimhin Leat…, because so much of it is music I play. For example, the air for the first song, Tuar Guil, a Cholaim, Do Cheol, will be instantly recognizable to any whistler as “Down By the Sally Gardens.” An Ghaoth Aneas is there (sung gorgeously!), as well as the title track, An Cuimhin Leat An Oíche Ud (“Do You Remember That Night”). If you play slow airs, you’ll love this CD. The newer one, Mairneas, is good too…less Irish music, but more from other Celtic countries, and the same great harmonies. The fun thing is, you can listen to most of that CD on-line, so it’s a great way to get a feel for whether you’ll like the group.
