Mary actually sings a lot of the songs we’re singing in our concert on this CD. It’s a solo album, but she layers the tracks, so the harmonies are all there. It’s really lovely!
Weeelll…considering that it’s HER concert, I think we’ll let it slide!
I’m really stoked about this CD (I’ve known about it for a couple of years now, and have been eagerly anticipating it). As you know, Irish vocal music is traditionally unaccompanied and sung without harmony, but Mary’s written some wonderful harmonies for these arrangements. Some of my favorites are “Leanbh sa Mhainséar,” (Child in the Manger), “Suantraí na Maighdine” (The Virgin’s Lullabye) and the utterly exquisite “A Leanbh Ghil Mhilis” ("O Sweet Shining Child), which may just be one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful tunes I’ve ever heard.
Three guesses as to what everybody on my Christmas list is getting this year!
