sheet music web sites

ive seen alot of web sites offering sheet music to subscribers and i was wondering which of these are worth the money or if there are any free places to go for sheet music

The " Session" website has just under 5,000 tunes listed, or perhaps it might be 5000 tune titles listed, but it has a substantial number anyway, all available to download free. As with probably all websites of this nature, you might encounter mistakes in the transcriptions, so beware. My favourite worst example is the person who posted only the first part of a 4-part bagpipe tune, and what’s worse, is that some people appear to have downloaded it !

Several places offer free sheet music, Greg.

Here’s a few to start you off …

Wanderer’s website has tons of music.
Digital Tradition’s celtic pages.
The Session is a huge resource.
Whistle and Squeak offers tunes in sheet music with pennywhistle tabulature included.

Have fun!

My favorite is:

You have to be a little careful with the version you go with…for any individual tune there may be 3 or 4 (or more) versions listed.

In general, I’ve found the tunes on www.thesession.org to be a little too bare bones and simple, but YMMV.

Agreed, JC’s is one of my favorites. If they don’t have it, no one will.

Not to diss JC’s, which is a great site, but it took me all of a minute to find a tune thesession.org has that they do not. (And I’m sure I could do the reverse as well if I thought about it a minute or two.) (Editted to say, done, it took me about two minutes to find something on JC’s that is not on thesession, at least by the name JC’s has for it.)

No site out there has every tune.

This is a dulcimer site with some nice tune sheetmusic – www.kitchenmusician.net

And I’ll second (or third or whatever) all the nice things said about JC’s, thesession and wanderer’s site. All are excellent.

I even found a Jewish folk song on JC’s that I couldn’t find anywhere else.
