We’re heading out to Michigan for a week and I was wondering if there are any open sessions in the Ann Arbor /Ypsilanti area.
Big one is Sunday night at Conor O’Neill’s in downtown Ann Arbor. I’ve never actually been to it, but I believe there’s also a Thursday night session run by the local CCE branch that I know some good people are involved with.
Be aware that Super Bowl Sunday may disrupt the Conor’s session. At least, it usually did back when I lived in Ann Arbor.
Paul, Here’s a link to Connor O’Neill’s website. According to the events schedule, they have sessions scheduled for Sunday, January 25 and Sunday, February 1. Enjoy!

Paul, According to their facebook page the Detroit Irish Music Association -CCE meets most Thursdays from September to May at:
1001 Green Rd.
Ann Arbor

From what I understand this group evolved from the Crotty-Doran Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann which used to meet in Ferndale, Michigan. In fact, your mentor in whistle making, the late Glenn Schultz, used to drop in occasionally at the Ferndale meeting to share his latest creations with Uilleann Piper, Al Purcell, and his students. I was fortunate to be one of Al Purcell’s students at the time. Time and family obligations forced me to set Irish music on the back-burner for a number of years, but I’m gradually getting back into the music.
If the Thursday meetings follow the old format from the 1990’s, lessons in dance and music precede a session or ceili.
Thanks Greg-- those look promising. Any chance you’d show up at one or the other?
There’s also one session in Detroit, Wed at the Gaelic League.
I believe the Thursday sessions are run concurrently with lessons, but I haven’t been able to make it often myself.
