I’m brand new to the forums and to fluting. I’m looking for any Seattle area flutists to meet with and play/practice share this wonderfull instrument with.
Do any of you know of/belong to a Seattle Area Club or Group dedicated to Flutes or with flute-friendly musicians?
-Don’t know of playing groups as yet, (I’m a rank newbie) but here’s the URL for Sessions NW, a site featuring calendar listings of Northwest
session activity:
-Another tack is Dusty Strings at N.34th St./Fremont Ave. N. Ask to see their binder of local
music teachers, some of them flute players-among them Hanz Araki of Setanta. Damian Werner at DS is the shop’s flute authority, and his enthusiasm for playing is matched by his enthusiasm for turning on other players to local music, so ask for him. Damian will play “Gold Ring” at slightest provocation, and quite well I hasten to add.
-Try e-mailing maker Casey Burns also
at: cburns@mail2.telebyte.com
He will likely write back soon with any info. he has. Please post any responses
so I can find out too! -Perhaps we could get together and play sometime also. My repertoire is hardly worthy of the name, but playing is a blast! I would love to play in a group with other inexperienced players.

I’ll have to check out Dusty Strings in Fremont, didnt know it existed. The only local shop I’ve found with wood flutes and whistles is Lark in the Morning, and thier quality fluctuates alot.
We should try to get together sometime, my wife and I are both new players of the flute. She has a background in Clarinet and is learning Celtic Harp.
Between the two of us we have plenty of flutes to play with: A Jade Flute, a few Pentatonic Native American Flutes (which I’ve played for a few years) 2 Peruvian Quena Flutes (they take LOTS of Air but play 3 octaves) a Rosewood Wood “D” Keyless, A blackwood “D” 5-key, a Hall “D” Crystal (Glass actually) Flute, and a Pair of Susato Low D Whistles.
We like the variety of different sounds and moods that come out of each and enjoy playing and learning to play.
Anyway, were on the south end- Des Moines, near the Airport.
If you like Flutes, be prepared for more when you go to Dusty Strings. They’ve got lots of whistles and (2nd hand) flutes, as well as many other cool folk instruments. And their Irish music CD collection is the best in town.
As was mentioned, Damian there can turn you on to the other flute players in the area. I’ll be back someday.
I’m in the area and play the flute. There already is a club so to speak. They seem to meet once a month or so and they last met early December. I never was able to make it but plan on going next time. It’s a potluck/session and I know their are some pro’s who attend like Hans Araki and also some pretty well known flute makers like Casey Burns and Peter Noy. Peter brought several new flutes for people to try out.
I’m in the area temporarily for the holidays but will be moving here next fall. I don’t play flute but I do play whistle and would love to get together for some tunes (and maybe a flute lesson!). Hope to meet you sometime.
Aaron-I live by the Ballard Bridge, an easy trip down 15th, Elliott and the shaky viaduct to to SR 99 and the airport freeway
toward Des Moines. Lets arrange some music in 2003.
Hey Brian and Aaron and anyone else interested. Here is the last email I recieved from the Flute get-together.
Hello Seattle area Irish/Wooden Flute Players and Friends of Flute Fanciers. Our next get together is Sunday, December 1, 4pm to 8pm. Email me for directions. Hope to see you all then! TimG GallagTL@aol.com
Please email Tim and asked to be placed on his list to get invites and reminders to Seattle Area flute events.
I will attend the next one for sure. If you guys decide to get together please CC me. I’m pretty busy myself but it would be great to get together. I’ve been playing for two years but consider myself a beginner. I only know a handful of tunes but I enjoy playing and practice daily.
