Seattle beginner's session... who's interested?

Ok, bear with me. I’m feelin’ a bit bolder than usual tonight.

I’m fairly new to this stuff myself, and I’m thinking it would be good to have a true beginer session around Seattle for poor beginners like myself who don’t know more than a few tunes. What I was thinking was something where instead of just barreling from tune to tune, maybe once every few weeks getting together to swap notes and teach each other tunes.

If you’re in the Seattle area and interested, pipe up here, or send me a private message with your email and we’ll set something up and have ourselves a grand ol’ time, newbie style.

PS: all instruments aer welcome, not just whistles. I’ll probably be mostly on guitar or mandoline myself.

Hi,
Though I’ve been lurking for a month or so, I just joined the forum. I’m a whistle beginner from Kent, WA, and I would definitely be interested in a Seattle area beginners’ session. I also have a fiddle and a guitar (both gifts from my dad) that I can’t play, but I’m starting with whistle.

I don’t know how often my work schedule and home commitments would let me attend a session, but I’d really love to find some other people to play music with. From what I’ve been able to determine, south King County (Kent, Renton, etc.) doesn’t have much in the way of Irish music activities.

Cheers,
John

Great! Well, there’s two, including myself. Here’s a bump, let’s see who else we can get.

Hey John,

If you’re interested in learning to play your fiddle, you might also check to see if there’s a branch of the Old Time Fiddlers in your area. They sponsor hoedowns and such, but they also do quite a bit of teaching…often at little or no charge.

I wish there were a beginner’s session in my area…I’d be there in a heartbeat!

I’m game as well. I’m a newbie flute player and a couple of other newer players on the flute list were discussing getting together. I’ll send you an email and include all those who have expressed interest so far.

  • Craig

Im also interested, although I dont know many tunes yet myself. I sent you(tinker) a private message with my email, maybe we can get in touch and get intouch with these others to get something started.

Well, I’d say this thing’s a go. I’ll send out an email to all, and we can set up a date. I’ll anounce it here as well as soon as things are set for anyone else who might want to wander in.

Way to go Ben! Count me in when I’m in the area!

Also, don’t forget Paul from Boise, he has family around there and comes to visit sometimes.

Edit - when you get it set up, announce it in sessioneer.com and sessionsnw.com if you like!

A suggestion:

Slow/beginning sessions are great fun and a good way to learn but it can be VERY helpful to have at least one accomplished player there to “lead” the session. Maybe you could talk someone from one of the advanced/full-speed sessions into stopping by once in a while to pitch-in (even if it’s not a whistle/flute player).

-Brett

That’s an excellent point, Bretton. I forgot to mention… any skill level is welcome, but more advanced players would probably find themselves doing much more teaching than playing. If you’re one of such gifted people though, you would certainly be welcomed and appreciated.

Once something is set up, you might want to announce it in all of the C&F forums, not just the whistle forum (assuming that’s allowed). There may be some people who would be interested that don’t read this particular forum.

Cheers,
John

Apologies all around for the huge file attachement today.

I’ll make sure they are more toned down next time I send them out..just realized how big they were. No need for 128 bit..hehe

I think Tink’s the only one who got bumped over quota from it, as my reply-all got bounced back from his account. Thanks for sending, though.

Hey, Ben and Beth, sounds like an excellent idea! It would be a good chance to torture, I mean, TRY out my flute playing on other people besides my family (yeah, I’m branching out, and it is a lot of fun). Might be able to talk my brother, John, into it, too, though he’s been a little busy lately (they’d been remodelling their townhouse and are now expecting their first baby in July

Take care!

Paul.

Hi Paul, where’ve you been? Drop me an email sometime, let me know how the Boise sessioneers are coming along.

I’ll try to send you a little e-mail tonight! Lots to catch up on

Later,

Paul.

If you get this going, and are still at it by summer, I will be out there for a wedding (at Woodland Park Zoo) and would LOVE to join in!!! I was also hoping to get to Dusty Strings, if someone would want to accompany me… I know this is planning FAR in advance, though ~ I’d be bringing whistle and flute…
