Sarvis-berry, serviceberry, shadblow, saskatoon

The shadblow are in bloom today which means the shad are running and it’s time to go shad fishing, but the serviceberries are in bloom too which means the ground is warm enough to dig graves for all the folks piled up over the winter.

Shadblow

Serviceberry

Dear goode Dwest, I think shadblow is another name for service berry. I am going to purchase shadblow along with a few other such lovely trees for my yard devastated by this winter’s blizzards. The birds love the berries. I love birds so it is a perfect match for me.

Saw my first spring flower on my morning commute today.

It is the sign that the two weeks of spring have started and then it is road construction season.
Wonder if the blood root and trout lily are out yet.

Those Puschkinas are non-native aliens, our bloodroot and trout lilies are blooming right now, as are our little brown jugs and spring beauties, very nice.

Yep, but in the city not much is natural. We’ll have to drive out a ways to see anything that is suppose to be growing here.

There’s always hackberry. Someone’s even been planting them on at least one MPLS boulevard, go figure.

Horticulture hacks are everywhere. I say berry them all!

And thus all serves as a reminder that I need to go take some more Benadryl . . . :really:

You need us. Face it. If there were only horticulture experts in the world, you’d all be sitting around looking at each other with little to say, other than admiring each others’ pollen samples or vascular bundle scrapbooks and the occasional tempest where you’d possibly debate whether Celtis occidentalis belonged to the Ulmaceae, Celtidaceae, or now the flippin’ Cannabaceae fergodsakes. As if the old excitements weren’t enough. Damn that upstart APG II system.

yer a treasure sometimes

Isn’t that like “Why, bless your heart.”?

yup!

or

That was so cute!

Huh? A crabby bilious curmudgeon with hair tufts coming out of his ears, cute?? I’m doin’ it wrong.

the hair tufts are annoying aren’t they :really:

Well, they do keep out the bugs, on the plus side.

that is important in the summer when yer not wearing them hats with the ear flaps, innit!

All too true, but to be honest, summerwear in Minnesota is a fairly flexible concept:

I’d think that had would require some amount of flexibility in one’s concepts!

that is a stunning photo :open_mouth:

It’s nothing special when you can go from lutefisk one day to samosas the next, Zubaz to Versace. And some of us mix it up. Like in the photo. Don’t kill me, I’m just the messenger.

Why, thanks. Couldn’t tell you how I find this stuff, myself. I think I must lead a charmed life.

I didn’t think you had tans like that in Minnesota . . .
