Running a Search is NOT Searching the Archives

Look at the screen:

Below Chiff & Fipple you’ll see the link for the “Archives” between “Free email newsletter” and “New! Chat”. That is the archives, the content of the old board before the entire message board moved in August 2001. When people tell you to “search the archives” this is actually NOT what they mean usually.

On the right, below the NEW TOPIC and POST REPLY buttons there are several links. On the right in the second line is a link called “[Search]”. This search feature will allow you to search everything in the current incarnation of the Chiffboard, that is: All the posts since August 2001. You can search by forum, by author, and you can select AND or OR connectors for your search terms. Very helpful. (Just don’t run a search for “whistle” or something silly like that.) Use this [Search] to search.

It is that [search] function, and not the “archives” that people mean when they ask posters do run a search before asking what whistle that was in LOTR, or what the difference between the Susato VSB and SB D is, and what whistle Andrea Corr plays. (She’s a trifle thin, isn’t she.)

Happy searching.

Thanks Bloomy. I’ve done it right often enough. I suppose I thought they were two means to the same end. Now will you kindly train the oldbies to say ‘search the forum index’? Then all confusion will be banished to the threads themselves where it rightly belongs.

You’re welcome, Womby. Since this is a thread about avoiding confusion let me just say, that the Forum Index is the list of fora, like the Poststructural Whistle Forum, the Flute Forum, Uillean Pipes Forum, &c, &c.

Alas, the oldies persistently resist any of my attempts to teach them anything. But, ok, I’ll try: Everybody, copy & past this sentence in times of need:

This has come up before. You might like to try running a search to see earlier discussions. To do so, use the [Search] function under the New Topic and Post Reply buttons.

Add the appropriate “Welcome, Newbie” as needed.

I don’t know, I think I am having a weird morning.

Many thanks for the clarification! I understand now and remain unclear as to why it was unclear to me originally. Clear as mud?

Lou

Never underestimate the capacity of the ordinary soldier to get it wrong, Bloomers. What you really meant to refer to was the Search function under the New Topic and Post Reply buttons at the TOP of the page (they’re repeated at the bottom)
