Rudall & Rose for sale - 2200 euros

There’s a Rudall & Rose flute for sale in Sligo for 2200 euros. Checked over by Hammy Hamilton. Looks to be African blackwood. A decent price too - 1785 sterling (2853 USD). Saw the ad this evening

“ANTIQUE RUDELL & ROSE flute, in key of D - very old, possibly 1860s,serviced by Hammy Hamillton, and in excellent playing order, all keys in good order easy to fill and sweet tone.”

Hmmm. If it is a R&R it can’t be “1860s” - would have to be a Rudall, Rose & Carte at least. He hasn’t stated the serial number either, and the photos are poor - anyone after it will need to ask some sensible questions! That said, it looks genuine enough as an instrument and in good nick. Why on earth do you think it might be African blackwood, Steampacket? Sure it’s dark, and the photos are ill-lit, but SFAIK R&R/RR&C simply did not make any grenadilla flutes! And the old cocus is often pretty dark. I cant remember seeing even later RC&Co flutes in grenadilla.

I wasn’t able to do a forensics test Jem not having access to the flute, just thought the flute looked like it was made of blackwood. This makes three Rudalls on offer just now. This one, Dave’s, and the Bonham one, four if David M’s is still for sale.

Oh, what the hell. Make that five. I’ll throw my RRC into the mix:

Rudall, Rose & Carte. It has the 20 Charing Cross, London, address, so it was made somewhere about 1855, give or take a year or two. No serial number.

Nickel keys. One repaired – and stable – barrel crack. Plays nicely. Original wooden case with a functioning lock and key! It is a very good flute.

I’ll be happy to post pictures and a sound clip in due time.

Is it the one I tried in Miltown Malbay, David? If so, it’s a nice flute.

looks like a RC to me…

Yes, Lorenzo-- that’s the flute. Thanks for the kind comment.
