Uh.
I want.

This looks like a lovely flute but what stopped me from bidding on it was the fact that it is made out of rosewood. If it was blackwood or cocus I would have bid. I wasn’t sure about the quality of this wood in a flute. Anyone care to enlighten me on the subject?
It is cocuswood! And pretty obviously looks like it!
FWIW, cocuswood is classed as a “rosewood”, which is a rather loose cabinet-makers’ term for a group of timbers. R&R, RR&C and RC&Co didn’t make many blackwood flutes at all, so far as I know. Quite a few of the later Rudall flutes I’ve seen, including a couple from the 1930s I’ve handled, have been in similarly ruddy-coloured cocus to the appearance of this flute in the pictures.
Another nice flute off to Japan, huh? Not a bad price either for what should be a superb player. (EUR 3,180.00/£2,560.60) My pupil was in for it (“granny money”/lifetime investment!) but it went £360 past his ceiling. And there was me hoping I’d get my hands on it a bit!!!
i own its cousin, #6208…and it’s one of my finest Rudalls.
you missed a grand opportunity.
Rudall did not make 8key flutes of rosewood. This would be called “figured cocus”
I have one in the 55xx series that is even more “figured” than this one.
well…live and learn!
it got a very fair – but low – price. $4500. Should have been over $5000.
Hi, David
that flute it’s really a beauty and it seems to be a powerful flute. Tell us how it sounds, please Rudall Master. ![]()
Has the R,R&C flutes a stronger tone than ones made by R&R (bigger holes, etc)?
i dont’ have that flute, senor galego…
I’ve found RRC and RC flutes to have the best tone and power.
My own RRC has a very very thin upper tenon (never cracked) and a gargantuan bore.
McGee’s website notes properly how Rockstro writes of Rose’s improvement on the conoidal bore in c.1851. I believe the flutes of that era and beyond to be the best ones of the lot.
There are some w/o serial numbers out there…and my inclination is to believe these were “seconds,” or flutes that were good, but inferior in some way to the others.
so if you buy, do so with caution.
Ah! you’ve got another similar (sorry, I’ve got a reading rush lapsus
).
Thanks for your advice,
Regards
Ah well now I know. Thanks for the info.
