Probably the wrong place to ask but what is the Gibson instrument that Tyrell plays. I think from photos I’ve seen and if I remember
from seeing him with Paddy Keenan years ago that it is single string. Is it a mandocello converted to play single string due to his preference or was it originally single string from Gibson? Just listened to The Broken Hearted Farmer Dan O Hara great song which seemed to be Finbar Fureys favorite last time I met him. He sang it in every bar we were in.
He sang it last night. He had both a, what seemed, a Gibson mandocello and a ditto guitar, both converted to take four single strings.
The guitar could have just been a tenor guitar, no? It is possible gibson made a single string mandocello. They seemed to do everything at least once. Thanks for the information Gumby.

Well, it could have but for one, and that was a bit of a give-away, it still had six holes/pegs below the bridge to take the original six strings.
I see. I haven’t seen to many closeups of the mandocello but I think there are only four tuners at the top but it its aconversion makes sense. Thanks again
Ronan Browne and Sean Tyrell are interviewed on Clare FM
http://www.clare.fm/music/ClareFM%20trad%20archive
Listen to the program dated 7th June. Music from the new album, and interview, starts at 1:06:00 in the program.
Ronan gave me a copy of their new CD a few weeks ago (and so the story goes . . .) when he called to buy a new pipe bag from me.
They were playing in the The Glens Center in Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim that night, excellent performance, what you hear on the CD is exactly
what they played on the night (only with banter) Well worth getting the CD as they are all on ‘top form’
