Last week Davy Spillane brought out a new CD, Between Longing and Belonging, right now available only from his web-site http://www.davyspillane.com but I think it might stay that way. The album is basically a retrospective of the last twenty-five years but the emphasis being on the low whistle. Four tracks come from Davy’s last CD, Deep Blue Sea, which was only released in Japan and is something of a rare item. For those who don’t have it, this is a bonus. In my opinion it was Davy’s best album. Three tracks are done in collaboration with surreal pedal steel guitar player, B J Cole, two totally new and recorded at Davy’s Burrenstone Studio, the third a track from Cole’s album Transparent Music 2 on which Davy guested. The remaining eight tracks are from Sea of Dreams and A Place Among the Stones but they have a freshness and more contemporary feel to them as a result of remastering, remixing and re-recording. The album hangs together very well and though I already had every track but the two new ones, I still am glad to have the CD and will enjoy the changes he’s made. The only confusion is that, as he worked on tracks, he has renamed them to fit in with a theme and a poem that is attached to the album. But it doesn’t bother me and I highly recommend the album to anyone who loves Davy’s low whistle playing.
Thanks for the heads-up about the new cd (albeit with some previous material) from DS. I hadn’t heard about it yet. It’s also available via Claddagh Records: http://claddaghrecords.com/index.php/instruments/whistle/davy-spillane-between-longing-and-belonging.html
