So, i’m sitting here… Watching this amazing concert. I see Liam pipe away, but he is pumping like crazy. Did Liam O’flynn’s set actually leak badly around that time? Because he really looks like an injured bird.
And i watch this piece of music that they present as “A piece of music that was got together for the eurovision songcontest”. Did planxty actually write this piece of music themselves? It truly is the most beautiful piece of music i have ever heard on the pipes, i wonder why this hasn’t been discussed further? I don’t know if they performed it as they did in the actual eurovision songcontest, but it is definately a tune that i am looking forward to teaching myself, unless someone has sheet music for it.
I hope that this concert hasn’t been forgotten, 1 hour of pure planxty is something worth a listen.
I just wanted to share my thoughts on this concert, that i watch/listen to almost every day.
Please don’t flame me because of my ignorance, i am a true newbie when it comes to all of this.
The only thing I can think of that fits your description is a piece called Timedance that was written by Bill Whelan (of Riverdance fame) that Planxty recorded in 1981 or 82.
I was not aware that there was a concert or video of it. When you say you are watching it, do you mean that you bought a DVD with this on it? If so, what is it called? Where did you get it?
Timedance was rerecorded some years later and included on Bill Whelan’s Seville Suite CD. The notes from the Tara Records website read:-
"Timedance '92
The Humours of Barrack Street.
Isercleran.
The Ballymun Regatta.
In 1981, RTE commissioned Donal Lunny and myself to write a piece of music which would be used as the centrepiece for their presentation of Eurovision in that year. ‘Timedance’ was performed by Planxty and subsequently released as a single. This 1992 re-recording affords not only a pleasurable opportunity to reassemble most of those involved in the original, but also a chance to have a new look at the treatment - eleven years on. In the event, we decided to leave much as it was, but there is a new arrangement of ‘The Ballymun Regatta’."
