Anyone go to the concerts??? Inquiring minds want to know
yes, the second [saturdaynight] concert in Ennis
I know it must have been asked before, but what does the word planxty actually mean?
Marc
Planxty is a toast or salute to someone. There is a similar thread on the ITM board on this site.

I got a phone call yesterday at work. “Sí Beag, Sí Mór” was playing at the other end. I was thinking to myself… who is this playing me Planxty records over the phone? So I hung on. Then I copped it… it was Gabriel McKeagney at one of the Vicar Street gigs… I nearly fell out of chair!
“Howaya Gaby” I said. “Shhh” came back at me. I think it was on speaker phone. It was a really nice to hear … thanks Gaby! Then the tune ended and the crowd went completely wild! It was great! I whispered “Thanks Gaby, see you next week” … “All the best Patrick”.
Now he can tell everyone he gave me goosebumps! And over the phone too! ![]()
Patrick.
Not to drop names or anything, but i got an email from Neil Mulligan yesterday saying that Lewis Blevins was there. I’m sure he’ll have plenty to say about the concert.
Me skin was a crawlin’ when they started playing. Real treat to be there last nite. Liam O’Flynn’s chanter was tonally challenged for about three tunes then came alive for a while. He switched chanters at one point and then I noted the same thing all over. Seemed that he played whistle riffs where he had played pipes on prior recordings so he must have been aware of the same issue. Geez…those guys are great together. C. Moore sez the reception they have been given is “beyond our wildest dreams.” The concert was audio and video recorded last eve so you folks may be able to see it. I was sittin’ with Gaby when he called Patrick. We’ll laugh about that one for a while.
Where did you go afterwards Lewis? I would have loved to have been there! Flynner’s pipes sounded great for the 30 seconds I heard ![]()
Have a great time over there!
Patrick.
The title of this thread has inspired me to compose a new tune entitled “Planxty Anyone.”
Patrick, they weren’t going to bad by the time you were called as that was an hour into the show. Concert was over at 11PM or so. We could not agree on a haunting place so went back to the hotel (Jury’s Christ Church–we had to select a hotel close to Vicar street venue…a hotel where the evil and aggressive flowerpots of Dublin wouldn’t recognize and attack Gaby) and had a pipers only session in the lobby. It was much appreciated by the management and other guests. Our fun came to a close at 1:30 AM when they had to close the bar/lobby to loungers.
