Hi guys. Just lookin for some feedback from anyone who plays or has played Paddy’s flutes. How do we like them? I’m thinkin of gettin a flute and lo and behold I just found out this guy lives in the same village as me…
So I wanna know if I should stay local!
I have a Paddy Ward Eb on loan from a friend. She just wanted me to try it. Really should get that thing back.
Anyway, awesome flute, great workmanship and plays like crazy. David Migoya (who can probably play a gym sock better than I can play a flute) also opines well of Paddy’s work.
I suppose I should mention the terrific advantage of a local maker…he can tweak the flute specifically for you and adjust it for breakin and your own progress on it…this is an invaluble advantage
Actually, I just came from the National Flute Association convention in San Diego. David Shorey was kind enough to offer me room in his booth, so I went down, just for Friday. Andra Bohnet had a workshop on Irish flute for classical flutists. Could you do your track on a Boehm flute, please ?
No, seriously, though, Andra seems to be having some success at subverting Boehm players toward Irish music, and I’m sure it’s through her efforts that a number of WFO CDs were sold. I’m hoping for additional follow-through when more players visit the Exhibit Hall on Saturday and Sunday.I’ll tap that audience yet.
I played with her many times during Boxwood this year. Noel Rice (one of this year’s instructors) was really keen in getting Boehm players interested in Irish music, as that’s all he plays these days. He led a workshop geared towards anyone at Boxwood playing the silver flute. It felt like such a great way to inspire all these young flutists to get more out of their instruments and to start playing by ear. It was also suprising, and I think a bit inspiring, to some of the more experienced players to see how difficult it could be playing trad music.
I really enjoyed her Skip Healy flute as well though, it vibrated brilliantly under my fingers and was really easy to play with the C thumb hole and B-flat trill. Definitely right up my alley for a wooden flute.
I have a blackwood Ward in D. It’s a great flute. It’s also a big flute (bore and holes). The craftsmanship is tops and the sound is lovely. Definitely worth considering on its own merits but even more so if you live nearby.
