For some reason or other Internet explorer is no longer storing the Forum pages in my Temp Internet Files folder, this is extremely annoying as I am no longer able to read back messages off-line, it increases donwload/on-line times and all that. The Cookie goes into the folder, other website still get stored the way they used to, no settings have changed on my machine, why do message board pages disappear?
Is there any reasonable explanation and is there away to get things back the way they were until last week, maybe?
Are you sure it’s Internet Explorer? I noticed the same thing, but backing up still works for me on other forums and web site. I’m thinking it has to do with a recent upgrade of C&F, but I may be wrong. I had to break a few habits. Now I just keep moving forward and copy the material before I leave the page so I can recover it.
I actually don’t think it is Explorer because other sites work as usual. Whatever it is it is extremely annoying and it makes browsing the forums a bit of a chore, maybe it’s fine if you are on broadband, pumping this over the hill from Ennistymon telephone exchange at busy times of the day takes ages. The form to respond to this thread took forty seconds to arrive for example so having to download pages with avatars and all every time you take a step back takes away from the fun of it.
Rich, if this has to do with the forum software, please fix it.
On some days, the pages load so slowly that I give up. In other words, I got to Forum, see a thread I want to check out, click on the page number and nothing happens but the “spin of death.”. There seems to be no pattern to it. i thought maybe it was my DSL service but seeing your subject makes me wonder. Similar things have been happening on Chat periodically of late as well. I use IE with a Mac, fwiw.
Lately, every time I post or submit a PM, I get a “Warning: page has expired” notification on my first bactrack to the board. It happens every time, now; not a problem as such, but a seemingly needless annoyance. Might this be related to what Peter brought up?
Nano, I only get that one on my extremely long-considered contributions, not one-liners. Happens so much that I copy if I have spent more than five minutes writing a post…I wonder if refresh rate/browser settings have anything to do with it, knowing that Chiffy sets session cookies…
Hi Peter,
I just tried working off-line and was able to access all the pages I’d previously looked at on the forum. It looks like a settings issue on your PC. I’m using Win 98ME, what you could try is go to the control panel and open “Internet Options” or if you have Internet Ex open click “Tools” and select “Internet Options” click on the “Advanced” Tab and then click “Restore Defaults”.
Cheers, Mac
One other thing, could you have used up all the availabe space set aside for Temporary Internet Files? Again look at Internet Options, on the “General” tab you’ll see the section relating to “Temporary Internet Files”, click on setting and see how much disc space is available, then go to the Temporary Internet Folder in "Windows, Local Drive C, right click on Temp Int’ folder and select Properties to see how much space you’ve used up. Just an idea
Thanks but I had looked at all of those, I have llooked at all options and settings on my machine that I know off, well enough to be reasonably satisfied that the problem is no on my end of things.
Nothing’s changed on the forums lately, so I’m not sure what to tell you. I don’t use Windows or Internet Explorer so I can’t be much help in troubleshooting that browser.
It will sound stupid but are you sure the option “check for newer versions of stored pages” is not set to “every visit to the page” ? Also, did you clear your temporary folder completely?
Well, as the joke goes 'round programmers, the way to fix a problem with something related to Windows is to reinstall Windows
One other thing that’s possible is that the web server hosting Chiff board is now sending different header information, like a NO CACHE header, which means it could affect the way Explorer manages offline stuff from all pages served by the server hosting Chiff. So, even if Rich said nothing has changed on the Board, it could be some config on the web server which Rich might not have total control of.
I suppose it must be something like that, all other websites/pages I look at function in the normal way not the boards though, it’s page expired or nothing at all all the time.
I’ve also been seeing the “Page Expired” thing, but another new thing is that no matter where you go now, back one page, the computer takes the time to refresh automatically. It never use to do that. I use to have to hit the “Refresh” button to get the updated status. This is definately local to C&F. Ebay doesn’t “refresh” automatically if you back up a page. Other forums with this same format don’t do this. I hate this new feature…change it back. I’d rather hit the refresh button myself if I want refreshed . And, I’d rather be able to back up a page, or three, or ten without seeing this “Expired” warning.
Exactly, pages are no stored in a cache, each step back means refreshing, as well as not beign available off line. It seems I am spending donkeys years on time waiting for pages to reload and I hate it.
Mine doesn’t take very long, it’s just a nuisance. Sometimes you want it refreshed anyway, but sometimes you want to look back 3 pages to see what someone previously said, then come back to your posting page and continue. Well, what happens now is you wait page by page to get there (unless you know where to stop and to click 3 times real fast), then same problem coming back to you posting page and when when you get back, your partial post (not parcel ) has expired and the contents lost.
GO VISIT ANOTHER FORUM LIKE THIS TO SEE HOW IT SHOULD BE.
Also, if you preview your post, then back up to change something, the contents are lost. Not so on other forums like this.
I realize you don’t back up to change something, you just move on, but even if you edit…same problem, and that’s all different now, it’s new.
Weren’t you complaining in another thread recently about the dial up cost in Ireland. If on-line times increase five fold becauee of this silly constant re loading of pages, then yes, it costs.
