Hi Lorenzo,
just to be clear, are you saying that if you post and then on seeing your post you decide to hit the edit button that your post dissapears completely? It’s just that I don’t seem to be experiencing the same problems as some of you regarding off-line viewing. I can disconnect and continue to view previously viewed pages fine or I can disconnect and close IE and then open forum pages directly from Temp. Int. Folder. I use Win98 ME but I don’t use the auto update feature and I rarely if ever update manually. I wonder if this isn’t a Microsoft problem or an OS issue.
Something to consider… though it may not be the main problem of page refreshing, it certainly doesn’t help.
Animated avatars, images and emoticons that are linked to remote websites will force your browser to reload each time you view a page that they are displayed on. If I’m offline, my browser often freezes until it times-out trying to load (or re-load) files it no longer has access to.
Yeah, internet is expensive in Ireland, but it’s not at all related to Chiff as far as I know. I just have the impression that you guys expect Rich to fix this as someone would expect their ISP to restablish a connection, which in that case makes sens since you pay for a service.
It’s as if you guys were blaming your city mayor about the fact that you couldnt walk in the city because you havent got shoes.
I’m still very curious about why offline browsing doesnt work though, hopefully we’ll have the answer soon.
I don’t see the connection.
The way I perceive it is… Peter asked Rich if he changed a parameter in the software running the board that affects pages in cache.
Quite right tony, a change last week affected the browsing of the Chiff and Fipple forum, I checked all the parameters on my end that I could think of before posting. Considering the boards are the only site affected by this change I asked the mayor of the city what the deal was and if it had to to with the boards to please return to the former situation. Also considering I am not the only one affected and given the fact the problem only occurs on the boards it’s not too much to ask the webmaster what the deal is? If he doesn’t know we apparently will have to live with it.
Okay okay, maybe the shoes comparison is a little strong. I just had the feeling that a sentence like this one:
did sound like an expected request. But I know that us canadians are used to add lotsa “thanks” and “could you please” and “I would appreciate” stuff… So, if a sentence doesnt sound polite enough, it sounds rude!
Some folks, like probably Peter, pay for online services by the hour. Some get 10 hours p/mo for a reduced rate. These folks keep track of time, and auto refresh, with poor dial-up connection can eat up the hours fast. Better not to provide that feature…being sensitive to those with differing connections. Auto refresh is only convenient when going from main menu to whistle forum and into a thread. And so, to save time, some folks go offline to do their work, and like to be able to back up to read previous posts. Some may even click through 10 pages of a thread then go offline to read them, saving time on the internet.
Here’s the new problem detailed for both online and offline. This is the same exact order I went through with both C&F and Gaelic Crossing, with a thread containing 2 pages each, both have this same format:
C&F Forum
C&F main menu
C&F whistle fourm
page 1 of “…hey Rich” thread
page 2 of “…hey Rich” thread
posting reply
previewing reply
preview addition to reply
backing up online:
preview addition to reply: still shows fine
previewing reply: “expired” (contents lost)
posting reply: “expired” (contents lost)
page 2: automatically refreshes

Now, please note something VERY important, the Expire header, the one from Chiff:
Expires: Mon, 08 Dec 2003 17:26:42 GMT
And the one from Gaelic:
Expires: 0
From my point of view, this is what’s wrong. Chiff pages are served with expiring dates that are “right away”, and Gaelic serves pages which “never expire”. Makes a big difference in how browsers will treat cache and offline browsing.
PS: I used the unix program called “curl” to fetch raw HTTP data, piece of cake for those who want to try. You just need the -i switch to include header info, which is what we really want
