I still don’t get how loud these whistles are. I first tought they were loud but not super loud. Now after reading some other comments (louder than Susatos!) I don’t know what to think about them. Are they louder than Susatos or not? I’m ordering a D/C set and don’t know if I should tell Ronaldo to make a bit quiter version or not…
I would write him your concerns right away. I’m sure he could make quieter ones–that’s what custom whistles are all about.
Check the website. The new (very new) design is not as loud.
Not that I had a problem with the loudness of my D. But I would not want to play it in small enclosed spaces.
I read about the new model, and it’s “a bit quieter” compared to the older model, but how loud was the older model? That’s the all point. If it was louder or as loud as a Susato (which is just a bit too much) then the new model would be better, if it was already quieter that a Susato, than “more quiet” could mean that it’s not loud enough.
I did write to Ronaldo (not a clear answer yet, maybe tomorrow), but i’d like more reports…
I’ve decided for the new version ![]()
I would consider the older style about the same as a Susato. So I bet you made the right choice.
I’ve had both the old and new Reyburns and to me, the new Reyburn session has just as much volume as the old one and every bit as loud as a Susato. In fact I recently sold a new Reyburn session that had a bit more volume than my Susato. It was right there with my Abell and Harper but not quite the vol of my Chieftain which is the loudest high D I’ve played.
Ballyshannon, The "New One " is really new as I’ve only made one and I’ve still got it. The voicing has been tightened “a bit” so its not quite as loud and sweeter and easier to hit the upper notes in the second octave. It held its own in a 12 person session in a large room with high ceilings.
Who wants to try it?
Ronaldo
Me. But I am very happy with my D/C set and really should not be tempted. ![]()
OOPS (senior moment)… I forgot that there are actually two of the new designs for the Session head, one of which Seamus Egan of “Solas” fame has. Which I might add he is VERY happy with. The other is here in my studio.

I didn’t know you were a forum member ![]()
And aren’t you making my one? ![]()
Yes Lorenzo, you will have the latest version #3 and you can tell everyone how loud it is.
Hey Ronaldo. Good to hear from you and nice to hear that you’re still perfecting an already great design. By “new” I was referring to your delrin head session D that came after the maple head…the one that’s been available for a while now. Hope to one day try #3 with an easier high end.
It’ll be interesting to get Lorenzo’s input.

Sure, I’ll be happy to make a short review of this new model ![]()
