Hhhmmm, interesting. I suppose that makes sense.

Sold for $6500 using buy-it-now.

Can anyone identify these pipes?

Auction states that they were modeled on a Michael Egan set. Isn’t there an Egan C set in some museum in Edinburgh?

Hi PJ

They may have been made by the seller - he sold a set of egan plans earlier on ebay - to Laurie Beck I believe.

I initially thought that it might have been the man in Belfast that I bought a teak chanter from, but it wasn’t (jimzbeans - he is the one selling the Preshaw half set).

David

I heard on the grapevine that there is possibly an Egan set in Liverpool Museum. They re-organised their displays several years ago, and a lot of stuff was put into storage. I will investigate this, and report back if I find out anything.

A C chanter. Looks like Tommy Martin’s work:

Dave Hegarty’s and David Quinn’s reedmaking books:

I have both books and they’re excellent. David Quinn’s includes information on the wet method of reedingmaking, which I’m going to try soon.

William Smith practice set:

I like the mount on the chanter bottom on this set. Nice looking stuff, I wonder how they sound?

Pat.

Here’s a chanter that seems to be made by the same maker (and offered by the same seller):

“Chanter in the scale of C. reeded by myself and playing. A nice clean bore. Again do’s not require rushing or tapers neither has there been any tinkering about with this chanter, Cannot be absolutely sure what it was cut from but I guess it was amazonian rosewood and was cut in 1999. THESE CHANTERS WERE MADE IN IRELAND BY AN IRISHMAN, and no there is no sound files, there is no mps files or any other sort of files so don’t be asking. These chanters were cut, under reamed and set aside for at least 3 months some of them may have been left for a year before finishing. They were made for myself to be played by myself. …:?. I hope this answers most of your querys.”

Don’t ye be askin for any feckin sound files.

Joe Kennedy B chanter (mounts by D Boisvert?):

2,500 euros for an Asian-made 1/2 set? I had a quick look at the seller’s (irishpipemaker) history. His two most recent purchases were (1) a 3 key, blackwood chanter from Other Worlds for $165 on July 15, 2008 and (2) a Geoffry rosewood halfset, bellows included, for $400 on July 10, 2008.

Apart from that, read the description.

I made the starter set from scratch and I added the drone section from a Pakistan set…

…The reed is a plastic reed I made as they are the easiest to tune…

He seems to be located in Co Clare. Does anyone know him?

Finbar Patel?

  • It’s a long, long way from Clare to here.

Hi PJ

That is a Pakistani chanter (I should know I have 2 - a left handed and right handed one).

As you suspect the seller has taken a Geoffry half set (which would include the case) and replaced the unkeyed chanter with the other worlds sourced chanter. A frankenset made up from a generic Pakistani half set (there are at least 15 Sialkot companies selling this set - with only 1 that I could find http://www.mbasharat.com/detail.asp?id=38-162-0-508 selling the full set version). and the Mid East chanter sourced from Other Worlds.

David

I thought “Geoffry” sets were Pakistani-made sets tagged with a name to make it sound made-in-Ireland.

From his description:

Ther Drones tune to the E key on the chanter.

My understanding (and I don’t give the matter much thought) is that the “Geoffrey” sets are a specific brand of Asian-made pipes. I don’t know if they’re made in Pakistan.

It’s a bit of a mystery why they chose the name Geoffrey. It’s not a particularly Irish name. Sounds more like a WWII era RAF wing commander.

O’Neill’s IMM - first time I’ve seen it for less than $60:

I know Billh has the whole thing on line at no charge, but some people like to have the book in front of them.

Well, there’s another Geoffrey making pipes isn’t there?
Just stating the obvious

Maybe he licensed his name … :astonished:
