Aw, c’mon, Emm. First, it’s ATM (Aurignacian Traditional Music). Second, everyone knows that the best “real” players all play birdbone cheapies. Those fancy tusk jobbies costing hundreds of beads are for posers and Gravettian wannabes.

By the way, MtG, what do you mean, hundreds of beads?!! I paid half a mammoth and my daughter for one! Those “hundreds of beads” jobbies must come from Pakistan. Probably not tusk at all, but just a cheapo imitation from some clam shell.
The next time you pay half a mammoth, make sure it’s the rear half. Then you can keep the tusks for yourself!

The problem with the inexpensive vulture- and swan-bone instruments is you’ve got to tweak them first…and getting the mouthpiece off is tricky.
“Oh no, I think I’ve over-tweaked again.”

So, which of our elderly tweakers are we going to do the joke about?

BTW, there is a mirror thread on the sites for The Fipple Flute That Shall Not Be Named claiming these artifacts are r******rs. Given MTs guess that they may not have had fipples, maybe the oldest instrument was really a Quena.

After looking at the Venus found next to the whistle, that would be an easy mistake to make.
Nah, take another refreshing look at the Venus. She hasn’t got nipples. Nipples were invented in the late fifties by Hugh Hefner, didn’t you know? Proved an instant hit, too.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that this was an end blown flute, like a quena. Also, the scale has a very oriental/shakuhachi sound to it. The Shakuhachi and other end-blown flutes (like the ney from the middle east) are some of the oldest instruments melody-making instruments known. close enough to a whistle though, this one.
