Practising some tune the other night(not very well)when out popped “when the saints come marching in” .Ifound myself really getting in to it varitions and all! Iheard Geoff wooff plays teddy,s bear picnic for a bit of fun and other famous pipers had their fun tunes
Patsy touthy used to do a funny regulator thing on one of his reels (maybe miss mccleod)
anyone play other fun tunes?

Here are three that usually provide me with a substantial amount of fresh produce each time I play them.
1). Ding, Dong, The Witch Is Dead…from the wizard of oz
2). The theme from Gilligan’s Island…television series.
3). The theme to I Dream of Jeanie (sp?)…television series.
But just in case I need more veggies, the theme for the cartoon series The Jetsons, usually does the trick. ![]()
Touhey’s encore was Turkey in the Straw. We do not have Patsy playing it on a recording but Joe Shannon does a masterful job on it!
Eddie Potts used to play “In the Mood” and he could also play the Harvest Home hornpipe on the regulators.
Try it starting on the low G on the bass reg.
GDBDGDBD/g-abagfd-/adbdcdbd/ etc.
Tommy.
I have caught a few people out by playing a slow air called “Padraig Post”
then slowly speeding it up 2nd or 3rd time through

[Gotta play it VERY slowly and lamentingly first time through]

The wife and I have 2 small children (4 and 2 years) and use the public library a lot.
The wife got a music cassette with “Winnie the Pooh” songs performed by reasonably famous artists. A few of the tunes were performed by The Chieftains, including the title track - “Winnie the Pooh”.
It’s easily played and the kids love having Daddy play a tune that they know.
Mr Conners , I too have young children. Even playing the theme tune for Teletubbies will not sway their loathing for the pipes!
There is a kids programme called “Balamory” which they love watching.
they will just about tolerate a rendition of that theme tune.
Jimi Hendrix’ version of the Star-Spangled Banner. The Woodstock version he got from listening to a 78 of John Lee Hooker, which version in turn is said to have originated in a legendary, absinthe-soaked session with George Gershwin in New Orleans (or was it Biloxi?) in the early 1930s. Waving the chanter just off the knee, combined with some slides and abrupt octave changes, approximates Fender feedback very nicely. YMMV.
Santana’s “Black Magic Woman”. You’d almost think it was written for UPs.
I haven’t managed it yet, but Jimmy Page’s solo break in “Whole Lotta Love” would be fantastic on UPs.

I guess I am fortunate, then. My girls like both the pipes and tinwhistle.
Their favorites are reels because they like to run around and “dance” to them. At this point I only know a few reels, but if the kids like them it’s more motivation for me to learn more reels.
[quote=“malanstevenson”]Jimi Hendrix’ version of the Star-Spangled Banner.
I hope you dont smash up your pipes when your finished

One of our local pipers has now and then played “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, regs and all. Someone oughta record that with a trance/disco remix and distribute it to the gay bars for St. Paddy’s day events. ![]()
Ahh…Jimi…
I have a recording of Touhey doing a bit of a tune on the regs in the middle of a tune, I think it’s Miss McLeod’s, I’ll check later tonight and see. Don’t know that it’s a tune within a tune, really, but rather just some fun stuff he’s throwing together.
Jimi Hendrix’ version of the Star-Spangled Banner.

That’s it - the only version with any soul. What’s with that guy’s website (no relation)? Sheesh…
How do I get this quote function working??

RORY
No, but I have been tempted to set them on fire occasionally…
Party pieces!
Mark Hillmann does “Over the Rainbow”
David Daye does “Misty”
The theme to Mr. Ed makes a good jig.
Has anyone done the theme to Beverly Hillbillies? I think that might fit on the pipes.
We do some church gigs, so I do “Amazing Grace”, starting chanter only in G, switch to D and turn drones on, then back to G with regulators going.
That is, when I get some reg reeds made, I crushed that phosphor bronze stuff and besides, they were pressure sensitive in opposite directions, limiting what could be played in tune), but I have the chords and single note runs I want to do.
Joe McKenna does the Patsy Touhey version of Miss McLeod’s Reel, playing the tune with the bell of the chanter on the regs while cutting the A note on the chanter.
Paddy Keenan does the Patsy Touhey version of Harvest Home Hornpipe for one of his party pieces.
“Beverly Hillbillies” reminds me of a little fun I have at one of the local sessions.
When this one tenor banjo player shows up I will go through the first couple bars of “Dueling Banjos” when there is a lull in playing.

For all the novelty piping tunes (GHB) you could shake a stick at.
Even got the theme tune foe Hawaii - 5- 0 ![]()
Anyone Man(or Woman) enough to attempt “The Entertainer”?
