weirdest tune you've ever done

On a dare, my worker buddies asked if I could play “born to be wild” on my pipes (don’t ask… everyone wants to be a rock and roll star). As a newbie I tried, got the signature melody notes out and quite with a crann. I was amazed I did it; I think they will be more “amazed” when they hear it bright and early at 7 tommorrow. So, on that que, what’s the oddest tune you’ve pulled off on the pipes???

Flintstones theme, Pure Imagination(with dirty lyrics about a girl who lies), Come on Feel the Noise, Jeopardy theme, Teddybear’s Picnic, Chopin’s Death March(at a wedding)

Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” guitar solo was made for UPs. Also some Hendrix. Currently working on “99 Luftballons”.

the pink panther?

Very cool. I always liked the Pink Panther theme music.

How about Yellow Submarine?

My favorite is on Artur Guja’s website

Hans-Joerg Podworny plays a version of the jazz tune ‘Take-five’

I’ve heard someone else play that one, too. It would be a hilarious party piece.

er, meaning “Take 5”, of course.

At a session once, a piper launched into “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I just about shat myself laughing, but we all joined in, and went on to slaughter a series of TV show tunes like “Mr. Ed”, “Gilligan’s Island”, and the like.

After that, I considered that a recording of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the uilleann pipes would be eminently suitable for gay bars on St. Paddy’s day, until it occurred to me that some idiot would remix it to a disco trance beat. No way, José.

A friend of mine did version of Quantaramera on his GHB at a party.
I’m sure it must be a law that forbids such extravagant behaviour.
I was feeling sick after only 4 bars.

Mark Hillmann?

I understand that David Daye does Misty.

Stairway to Heaven.

I played it just to shut up some drunken loudmouths who kept calling for it.

They sure shut up when I played it (most of it, anyway).

Funny, Lead Zep lifted the beginning of Stairway to Heaven from an O’Carolan(sp?) tune. You’ve come full circle! :sunglasses: Thank God we can be silly once in a while. The Beatles Mother Nature’s Son is actually really pretty on U.P. At almost every gig I play some white trash bastard who thinks he’s funny asks me to play Skinnard. If you really want to make people sick, play the Macarena. :boggle:
Marc

Spanish Flea by Herb Alpert :boggle:

R.O.F.L.

How about “Lowrider”?

I thought I was the only one…

Last night I found myself playing excerpts from the 1812 Overture (this is the cereal that’s shot from guns*). Great fun with the regulators!

Reminds me of when I tried to initiate the annual “BC Childress Inapropriate Tunes for Uilleann Pipes” contest at the Chicago tionol a few years ago. I couldn’t generate enough interest to get going on it. But, there were a few inapropriate tunes played that weekend. John Gaffney has one of the printed T-Shirts that would have been the prize. The following year featured the first annual second attempted-and-failed Inapropriate tunes for the pipes competition. That time it was planned to fail, and thus, no t-shirt.

My favorites for goofing around: Jeopardy Theme (occasionaly, a really on-the-ball bodhran player will go “boom-BOOM” at the end), Theme from “The Wild Wild West” TV series, Adams Family TV series, The Brady Bunch TV Series, Black Sabbath “Iron Man” and “Colonel Freebird”.

I have to much time on my hands.
