OK, here’s one for ya: If you had to choose a tune that would be theme music for a radio show (you can pick a different tune for the opening and for the closing of the show), what would it be?
Can be solo on the whistle
Or can be whistle accompanied by bodhran
Where would you record it? In your home where there is no background noise, or in the street, or in a classroom with others listening in?
Yeah, but nevermind them things. Pretend I’m playing something like… um… well, not the recoldr.asd, malknglkk… I can’t even spell it, my keyboard won’t let me…
What tunes would really catch your ear and make you want to listen to the show?
Since this is the “poststuctural” pub, I’d go with U2’s “With or Without You” on low D whistle for the intro. Maybe their new single on vocals and Bodhran only for the outtro.
Two tunes I’m trying to learn at the moment would suit, McGlinchey’s Hornpipe, and Tommy Peoples’ Jig #1. They’s have to be played on a fiddle though, as both go below the D.
Both feature arpeggiated runs up and down, C# and Cnat, and use of the fiddle’s G string, and they’re catchy as hell.
I’ve also just discovered “A Day at the Races”, a simple enough jig to play but very catchy.
What tosh, Martin. When you go below D you just stop blowing and sing the note you want. However, I don’t recommend using that method for notes that go off the top end of the whistle.
The Mistcovered Mountains or the Lilting Banshee or one of those a-modally jig jobs there. If it’s a bit “Celtic” I’d consider Northside Kitchen for the modulation.
How about bodhran accompanied by whistle? Let’s say, Danny Friggin’ Boy with lots of of exaggerated smearing and let those long dramatic notes die out flat in the Celtic mists just the way Davy does. Then you could add a touch of synth and … oh shuddup Wombat.
