tunes for children

I am interested in learning some tunes to play for my nephews and a friend’s daughter. I’d like to know some simple tunes that a child could sing along to. They don’t have to be irish tunes, just anything that’s playable on the chanter. I’m thinking along the lines of nursery-rhymes, lullabies and bits of ditties, and maybe tunes that have words associated with them like ‘bean phaidin’ or ‘will you come down to limerick?’ although these might be a bit too complicated.

I always get a good response from the kids (and adults) in church with “Jesus Loves Me” and “Jesus loves the Little Children”

“Miss Mary Mack” can be played by a kid on the bass reg…
Row row row your boat (ahem sorry…currach  )
Bingo,
Jingle Bells,
Mary had a little lamb,
Ode to joy,
Coulters candy
Happy birthday
Old Mac(Mc)Donald
Banbury Cross
all that kid stuff

Polkas are good.

If you have drones, remember that sometimes the sound of the drones can frighten young children. So prepare your audience. :tomato:

Is this some sorta joke or whit :boggle: :boggle:

The sound of drones frightens young children. What’s funny about that?

Pop Goes the Weasel

Drones frightening children? Unusual, but I’ve seen it happen.

Nick

It might just be the make of drones I’m playing.

PJ I wasnae referring to yoor good sell…I can’t believe the original question :boggle: I mean has he never seen or been a child hisell?
Anyways does the child want to hear him play childish tunes? has he asked them? They would probably tell him to sod aff and carry on looking at you tube or whitever electronic delights were in their present sphere o interest.O’er here they would probably smash him o’er the heed with the empty bottle o bucky, non o yer milk wimps or dummys. :really:

Tis very hard to tell what kids will like. My 11-year-old daughter liked Irish traditional music from the start and she’s going to start button accordion this summer (she’s played piano now for 5 or 6 years). She always liked the basic repertoire. My youngest 3-year-old daughter (exposed to the same tunes) likes stuff like “Video Killed the Radio Star” and sings it with all the words correct.

thanks to those who offered helpful contributions - i’m going to have to look up some of the songs mentioned as i’m not familiar with them all

mine currently prefer the works of VanWassanaer, middle period Queen, selected Django Reinhardt tunes, and filmscores by Miklos Rosza. Oh, and Taylor Swift.

This is true..me mammy tells me that when I was 2 years old I loved Greensleeves and would go into a trance like ecstacy when I heard it…even today it has a certain unknown about it for me…maybe I wrote it in a previous incarnation…point is don’t presume the child will just love any old crap just cos ye think it will… :open_mouth:

The golden rule: No slow airs.

t

wow uilliam ! lol

anyways, my 4 year old likes it when I play, and it don’t really matter what I play. Fell asleep once on me, and another time was naming the notes I was playing.

While one may scoff playing kid songs ahem– bands that play jazz drums, accordions, bassoons, guitar, trumpets and tubas to off the wall music that’s catchy wind up getting hired by Disney (They Might Be Giants). Just a little thought.
