not being allowed water

Does anybody know why, when one takes radioactive iodine pills, one is not allowed to drink water?

I went in for the first part of some sort of scan which takes two days, and I haven’t been allowed to drink anything (including water) or eat since yesterday evening until today after 10:00.

I’m not so much hungry as THIRSTY. I haven’t even been able to brush my teeth, for fear I would swallow water. WTF?

Maybe the water would wash away the substance that they need to view with the xray gadgetry.

It might dilute the iodine, making it more difficult to see on the scans.

I had similar instructions when I had a surgical operation scheduled once. You never realise how much you want to have some water until you’re not allowed to!

Did they specifically say not to brush your teeth? I would think the amount of water absorbed by your mouth while doing so would be pretty negligible, and it would be okay to do it. You’d probably get just as much moisture through your skin in the rain.

Yes, I guess that’s the reasoning of having it scheduled at 7:45 in the morning, to think I wouldn’t want to that early.

Gah!

At ten o’clock I am allowed to drink water!! I’m allowed to eat, but only “foods low in sodium” and I don’t believe in that.

Being hungry doesn’t bother me–being thirsty is what is killing me.

I think they do it for surgery because they don’t want you to aspirate
anything while under anesthesia. At least, that’s why Vets do it.
(All my medical “knowledge” is second-hand from Veterinarians.)

Thinking about it will make it worse…try to do something to take your mind off it, like playing a video game or reading a book. Don’t got for a walk though, hehe.

I’m on C&F…that’s my cure-all for everything.

Ten more minutes and I can have some water!!

I DRANK WATER TWO MINUTES EARLY!!! HAHAHAHA!!

I feel much better. Now I’m looking for those biscuits I got at breakfast but couldn’t eat…

If you don’t “believe in” following the instructions, then by all means don’t follow them. When your test comes out screwy, you can just wait around a bunch more weeks to have the test done over so you can get a diagnosis.

You were asked not to drink water because it interferes with the test. Some people wouldn’t understand why they had been asked not to drink water, and they would swallow water while brushing and not consider it “drinking water.”

I know that! I wasn’t being serious about not believing in it!

I don’t believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, Low Sodium Foods or other such myths :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s the same kind of thing with people who say they don’t believe in homosexuality, as though it doesn’t exist.

Yeah, but low sodium foods are what give ME nightmares  :stuck_out_tongue:

I know, right? I’m such a Fritos and Diet Pepsi whore. I can’t live without them.

Yeah, forget sugar, salt is where it’s at!!!

Oh. OK.

You know, salt is one of the easiest addictions to get rid of, at least it was for me. The trick is to eat very spicey foods for about a week but leave out the salt. After that you can go back to eating foods that you’d only put salt on and they taste fine without.

Now caffeine is another matter.

Does this help??

Or this??

You are a cooch.
