Next D Whistle

I’m looking for my next whistle and the main consideration is easy to play, a good woody (mellow) tone and easy to raise to the next octave with out it sounding like a wounded cat.

I presently have a Mellow D Walton tweaked by Freeman which I really like a lot, but whats the next step up say under $100.

How about the any of the whistles Kaolin is selling in the previous post?

Adjectives mean different things to different people. “Woody” and mellow will be interpreted many ways. My interpretation is an actual wood whistle, and most of those are more than $100. The Whistle shop has an older wood Sweetheart in that range. The newer “pro” models are more money.

[edit] oops, sorry the $95 model is sold out, but you might find one used like I did. Here is the link to the maker’s site:

I have one of these older Sweethearts in cherrywood and it is a nice whistle, relatively easy to get the second octave, good volume, average breath requirements. However, “mellow” doesn’t fit its personality.

The Burke brass D listed for sale in the other thread is a nice whistle, but “woody” is not an adjective associated with most brass whistles.

I have a couple of Hoover Whitecaps which I love. If you’re near Columbus I can make an arrangement for you to hear it (PM me). IMHO the bang for the buck with the Whitecaps is unmatched.

I’ve heard good things about the Syns, which are also in your price range, but I haven’t heard one personally. Susatos are also in your range, but I’ve never heard them described as “woody!”

I’d personally go with a Dixon. Soft sound, but strong. And if you could find one, go with a Water Weasel. I think Doc Jones has one or two of those NT’s for sale.

I would suggest a Sindt the waiting list is about a year long (but way worth it) but after I bought my Sindt D I loved it so much I traded my Burke DASBT for another Sindt in C. It is at the top of your price range but it is an amazing whistle mellow and complex with a high amount of chiff and very responsive. I have heard Humphrey’s are just as good and I think the wait is shorter but don’t quote me on that.
