Medium Priced ($40-$70) Whistles: What are your favorites?
If you go up to $90 you can’t beat a Sindt. But that wasn’t your question, was it?
Not that my opinion on whistles really matter since the only other whistles I’ve played are cheap ones but my O’Brien D makes me giggle like a pre-pubescent girl.
Everyone seems to like Syns. Mine was playable.
My Dixon aluminum was very nice (and fit nicely into your price range).
I would also suggest anything to which Mack Hoover has laid hand.
I paid $.50 for a clark sweetone in a garage sale that I would not take $40.00 for it. ![]()
Woah! I never thought of Texas being home to many whistle owners especially those selling them at garage sales.
In that price range…definitley the Dixon Aluminum with brass tuning slide.
Most of them are in Houston, I am south of there.
I’ve two favorites. One at the bottom, and one at the top of your range.
Freeman tweaked Shaw D
O’Brien Sop D w/copper fipple plug
Both very nice whistles, both loaded with character.
Have fun,
I’d go with O’Brien “C”, a very balanced whistle.
I’ve tried a Dixon “D” and that’s was nice, very sweet but i found the breath control quite fragile.
Black Diamond “D” was very playable but i didn’t like the voice or what i consider to be high back pressure.
I haven’t tried one, but lots of people rave about Gerry’s Mellow Dogs.

Mack Hoover’s CPVCs or Whitecaps are a treasure.
Best.

This brings to light somthing! My taste in whistles has changed. A year ago had this same question been asked, I prolly would have named a whistle brand that has quite abit of chiff and breathiness. Both of the afore mentioned whistles are extremely mellow whistles, low chiff, and low breathiness.
Water Weasels. Alas.
Actually, I think they’re the only whistles I’ve played in this price range, unless you count the Weltmeister. Or some used ones, of which the Burke WBB (I think it lists for $90 now) is not only the best in this range, but one of the best period.
In that price range I’d have to say Syn.
My finding was that if you get a good one, its worth a lot more than you paid for it. If you DON’T get a good one its worth about what you paid for it. Either way its money well spent.
Sincerely,
Tyg
Anyone remember the old Perrys?
In this price range I choose the Alba Q1. For a little bit more I choose the Humphreys narrow bore D.
I love these two whistles I also like my Whitecap/Oak. There lots of good ones out there. The real problem is that in any price range there is no whistle that everyone will agree on. Each of us has a different sound we are looking for and that may change from day to day.
I want them all.

Now that Water Weasels are no longer available, I’d say that OBrien is the reigning king in that price point.
Solid whistles, good service, nice guy and he makes damn near every key (and sets).
I’ve been playing my Bb and E whistles that he made me quite a bit lately, so his whistles are very much at the front of my mind.
Mack Hoover’s CPVCs or Whitecaps are a treasure.

Simply can’t add anything to that!
