Dear Sirs,
I am a complete beginner. I am looking for a tutor based in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne/Gateshead area of the north of England. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you
SL. Johnson
Have you contacted the NWUP? Although they are based in Manchester they do have pipers from all over, and a few up in Yorkshire who might know of pipers nearer to you. Contact them via www.nwup.org
Some (possibly outdated) info:
- Joe Crane was always the centre of piping information around the North-East.
- You could try Ann Moore at the Chantry Bagpipe Museum. Years ago a few of us had monthly uilleann meetings there.
http://www.bagpipemuseum.org.uk/ - Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann has a branch in the Newcastle area.
The Tyneside Irish festival is taking place right now.
Liam O’Flynn and Paddy Glackin are playing at the Irish Centre on October 19th!
I can’t imagine a better music lesson than listening to Liam play live.

When I attended the festival back in the early 90s, they had a weekend of workshops for many instruments.
Christy O’Leary did an uilleann workshop.
Maybe it is worth seeing if they still have a similar programme.
