I just received a copy of the new CD (An Amzer Gwechall) from Duo Carvou/Bizien. See also Malo’s own website for info about him/his music.

There are (not necessarily album-related) YT video links on both websites and he also has audio tracks on his MySpace page. The album cannot (according to Malo himself) currently be obtained direct from him/via the Duo website, but can be ordered (at a very reasonable price, even including international P&P) from this online source: http://www.albumtrad.com/en/duo-carvou-bizien/00587-an-amzer-gwechall.xhtml, where there are also sample clips. I was impressed by their service.
The album is superb. I’m not going to write a full review, but suffice it to say the playing is impeccable and delightful. The material is all either Breton trad or “swing-valse” (no ITM) and Malo’s tone and impressive chromatic command of his 8-key flute shine through. Bernard Bizien’s guitar playing is subtle and solid to suit, though he seems to me to be definitely an accompanist (and a damn good one) rather than on an equal footing with the flute, nor is he as inventive as say Yvon Riou was with J-MV or Heikki Bourgault is with Calum Stewart. So, more of a guitar-accompanied solo flute effect than an equal duo, perhaps… but that’s in no sense a criticism, just an impression/evaluation. The recorded sound is nicely natural, no excesses of reverb here! Very enjoyable and strongly recommended!
