I’ve now spent a few days with my new Copeland Low D and I just can’t say enough about it. (My experience with Low d whistles is limited to Cheiftain, Burke, Overton, and Susato.)
This Copeland Low D plays like a dream, top to bottom. The tone is full, round, reedy, and smoooooth. I am amazed everytime I play it. The upper octave is sweet and bright all the way up to and beyond the high b. The lower end is strong and reedy. The octave jump is perfectly balanced–it goes where I want to go without out too much effort. I couldn’t be happier.
The only negative I could come up with would be that the c natural takes a touch of finess (in terms of breath pressure) to keep from blowing sharp. Although, as with my Copeland Low F, I became used to it in a short time.
The breath requirement is less than I expected–slightly less than my Burke AL Pro.
To me, Copeland’s are beautiful whistles. This Low d keeps to that standard.
I also found JimR to be very willing to chat with me about my whistle preferences and very helpful in general.
All in all, this is the most impressive whistle I have played.
