Neuroscience of Music, on PBS

Just got the heads up about this. Sounds very interesting!

The show, 'Music Instinct: Science and Song" will be on MPT (channel
22?) from 9:30 - 11:30 p.m.

“This documentary provides a groundbreaking exploration into how and
why the human organism is moved by music. New work in neuroscience is giving
us clues to the mysteries of how and why music penetrates the brain and
the emotions. The program follows visionary researchers and accomplished
musicians to the crossroads of science and culture in search of
answers to music’s deep mysteries. The program includes compelling performances
by world-famous performers, in genres from rock to classical, such as
Bobby McFerrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley and Evelyn
Glennie.”

Sweet! This looks like a series (or miniseries). Just called the missus to have her set the DVR …
Thanks for the heads-up!

Yargh, but I miss the ability to get anything at all on the telly except DVD’s!

Did you forget to get a converter box?

Nope. Got one. Just failed to live in an area that gets any type of signal at all, or to be able to afford the ridiculous fees for satellite.

Ouch.

Have you tried any of the crazy new antennae?
Some of them can be subsidized (or at least,
could a year ago.)

Thanks for the heads up.

The intro was pretty good. Some segments interesting, some soporific, overall, the show was just okay. Towards the end of the show, they were losing me. Tighter editing and half an hour shorter would have been my suggestion.

I watched this show. Very cool. I never realized the crying pattern of my babies voices. After they pointed out the 1st-5th-minor3rd pattern, it was a “ah ha!” moment.

BTW didn’t Jarvis Cocker have a slight to do with the late MJ back in the day?

I thought the whole program was fascinating. It seems that each new fact we learn about the brain’s functions opens another door to further complexities. Any musician who has spent hundreds of hours practicing and performing has experienced the out-of-body endorphin and dopamine mediated feelings described in the program. It is a great natural high that even our cave dwelling ancestors experienced thousands of years ago.
Mike

That, I thought, was most cool.

I also thought is was no surprise that babies seemed to pay attention to consonant chords and progressions, and seemed to at least ignore, if not be distressed by, dissonant ones.

This explains why my children will not listen to me while I am practicing. :stuck_out_tongue:
