I bet you’d enjoy reading some of Oliver Sacks’ case studies. (He wrote Awakenings, about his work with L-dopa in sleeping sickness patients. He was portrayed by Robin Williams in the film.)
My introduction to him was The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. I also enjoyed An Anthropologist on Mars.
He also seems fascinated by the “how does it work?” aspect.
