Well, here goes.
I’m going to be playing my Burns Folk Flute (in key of D) in our pipe band concert coming up in a couple of months and our Pipe Major wants more diversity in the program and has asked members of the band, if they play other instuments, to contribute–you know play solos and such. Soooo, I’m thinking of doing a duet with a tenor who would sing the melody to “Danny Boy” (key of G) while I play harmony on the flute; however, I need the written notation. Also, I’m thinking of doing the same thing with “Amazing Grace” in the key of “D.” Thanks, in advance for any help you can give. Donald.
Do you use ABC music files? if so open application check menu, find Transpose and change the key signature to the one required.
I think you’ll find the pipe music for Amazing Grace is already written in D.
Iain, thanks for the response and I will look into the ABC Music Files, for certain. Your correct about “Amazing Grace” being in the key of D; however, I’m in need of the harmony portion, if one exists, and I’ll bet it does somewhere. Same way with “Danny Boy,” I have the melody, but need the harmony. I know that there is software out there that will transpose melody to harmony (at least that is my dream), sounds like ABC Music Files may be the solution?? Again, thanks for the response. Don.
Hey Donald,
I sent you via email a copy of Danny Boy with a harmony I do with my band. I sent it in both pdf form as well as an editable (if you have Finale) .mus file
Clark
Thanks Clark. Played it on the piano and it sounded wonderful, very nice! I sent you an email just a few moments ago regarding transposing to key of G. Donald.
Sorry for the delay as I’ve been really busy at my day job. Anyway, I’ve sent you a new pdf of Derry Aire in G with some alterations in the harmony to make it more flute friendly.
Clark
Hi Clark: I just tried the arrangement that you sent on Derry Air (Danny Boy), 2nd copy and it was beautiful
. I can’t thank you enough for all of your help!! I feel that with the harmony part and with the tenor vocalist I have arranged, this piece will put the concert in January, “over the top,” so to speak. When I give the performance, I’ll see if I can get a DVD made of it and send you a copy. Plus, I’ve been thinking of adding a key board (my Brother-in-Law is a well known organist in these parts, and I think I can talk him into playing). We’ll see how it sounds with him added.
I know that you didn’t expect anything in return and I certainly don’t want to offend your kindness and generosity, but I’m so greatful for your time and help that I would like to send you a little something to show my appreciation. If you wouldn’t mind sending me your address in a email I’ll post it off to you. Thanks again, Don.
