I’m very impressed that you were able to make a nice sounding whistle on such an early try. Good job! You’ll get better at the whole process, whistling, making, and videoing as you go along.
That top link is a charming video. The Low-D whistle sounds pretty nice!
When you get those squawky, off-note sounds, it’s probably because your fingers aren’t covering the holes completely. You may want to experiment with the angle at which you hold your hand, so that the upper fingers touch the whistle closer to the hand than the lower fingers do, and the lower fingers closer to the finger tips. You might end up with the two hands in somewhat different positions.
Thank you for all the feedback… It helps me alot. I have some ideas for some different mouthpieces. Experiment and experiment some more until I get something I am really happy with. I am also considering going with a 1 1/4" cpvc pipe for my low d. 1/2" cpvc for my high d’s…
What is your low D like on the second octave. I built a low D out of a piece of shower-curtain rod (7/8" diameter) and I found that my second octave G kept wanting to drop an octave until I put a bit of an obstruction at the end of the fipple. I would like to hear you run through 2 octaves on your whistle.
BTW I think you are doing a great job. I have learned from experience that whistling is way harder than it looks.
Hey Gregory, nice video’s. I like the kid, thanks for leaving that bit in.
Can you tell me where on the web I can find the music for Welcome Poor Paddy Home? ABC format would be best, but I’ll take anything. My Gooooooooogling didn’t turn up anything useful.
I am not good with ABC but if you just want the rough notes here goes:
D E F# (roll) E (roll) D
F# A d f# e (cut) e d A B A
F# A d f# e (cut) e d c# b c# d D
D E F# A F# E F# E D
B B B A F# A B A A A
F# A B d B A F# E F# E D E
B B B A F# A B A A A
F# A B d B A F# E F# E D E
Of course you will need to add the cuts and rolls whereever you like. TinWhistler does a nice job of it on YouTube. That’s where I learned the tune. Hopefully I have not made too many mistakes in the transcription.
