I have acquired an Olympus DS-2 recorder and a Sony ECM-DS70P “T” style stereo mike (thanks to recommendations from this site), and I’m getting some half-way good recordings with it.
But now I want to edit these recordings. Nothing too complex – mostly just cutting out the dead time at the front or the false starts. Maybe add a little reverb to get that “playing in a cathedral” effect.
I need a recommendation for editing software. I downloaded Audacity, but it doesn’t seem to recognize the .wma files that the DS-2 produces.
Any suggestions? (Nothing too complex, though. I only today learned how to burn a CD.)
I think the easiest thing to do would be to convert your wma files to
wav files with a converter like this one. wav files can be read by Audacity.
wav files are not compressed the way mp3 or wma files are, so they
can be much larger. So, when you are through, you can use the
conversion program to compress it into mp3 or wma.
Can the Olympus record on anything other than WMA file format? recording .Wav format is very useful.
True, but you’d fill up the memory 10 times as fast…
.wma files are all we use on the www.uilleann.org site. They’re very easy to convert to, and from. I generally use a program such as Goldwave to do it - but there are plenty of others capable. Don’t have the link off hand, but you can Google it I’m sure.
A belated thanks to all for the help. I downloaded the converter fearfaoin linked to and it worked like a charm. I have not done too much with it yet, but I was able to convert a test file into .wav and then load it into audacity.
Now I just have to learn to use audacity.
And in answer to Tom O’Farrell’s question – This recorder does have another file typ, but it’s for low-fidelity dictation recording.
All in all, the Olympus DS-2 recorder/Sony ECM-DS70P microphone combination is working pretty well for my admittedly low-tech purposes. Although far from studio quality, it did a passing good job of sucking in the songs from my kids’ choir performances so i can make CDs and bother people with them.
Thanks again.
