Converting .mpg's and .mp3's to .wav--freeware?

I’m looking for some free software that will convert .mpg’s and .mp3’s to .wav files. I want to take the audio portion of the .mpg files on my madfortrad whistle tutorial and burn them on to a CD so I can listen while I practice, away from my computer (I don’t really need the video part of the file). Same with converting .mp3’s of clips people post into wav.'s. Or is there some other way to do this? I use Roxio to burn CD’s, I don’t think it’ll convert for me.

I can’t practice where my computer is, and I learn a lot better if I can keep referring to the tune while I’m learning it–having a CD would let me do that. Any help would be appreciated.

I use software by Acustica which has a Wav. to MP3 or vice versa converter. I believe the program is called MixMaster by Acustica.

There’s freeware called Audacity that will do the trick.

If you burn the .mp3 to a CD it will be converted to the uncompressed format used by CD players if you burn it as an Audio CD.

It’s true that Audacity won’t help you with the burning to CD, but it is a handy program to have, especially for one that’s completely free.

Among other things, it can slow down or speed up wav and mp3 files, so you can take one of the lesson mp3’s, for instance, and practice with it at half speed, then bring it up to 3/4 speed, etc…

What I want is a program that converts iTunes proprietary files to MP3. I read about some process that is involved and troublesome but it seems too complicated for me.

I can workaround it by burning them to CD’s then ripping them back into the computer, but that’s a huge waste of time and CD’s.

CDex (ver 1.51) is a free program that converts files from .wav to mp3 and vice versa. I think it’s made by the same makers of Audacity, which enables you to edit .wav and mp3 files. I find the2 programs complement each other.

CDex can also rip CDs into the above 2 formats, altho it won’t burn CDs for you.

There is in addition a function whereby you can record analog input (e.g. sound from a microphone) directly into mp3 format (ie, you don’t have to first record in wav format, then convert the latter to mp3). I use this to record my whistle playing.

Yeah, I use CDex as well as Audacity. Both are great and do the job for me. I also use Nero to burn CD’s which then covers my whole musical needs…

As an editing tool, I just love playing around with audacity, but then I am a bit of a fiddler when it comes to tunes that I have recordered (I am never satisfied with my sound) The option of changing pitch is great for playing along with another whistle in a different key.

This info probably does not help with your iTunes… :sniffle:[/img]
