Native American names

When the movie “Dances with Wolves” came out, my sisters and I were considerably younger ( cough, wink ), and we gave everyone interesting, descriptive Indian names. The mean, fat boy that lived across the street, we named “Stands with a Twinkie”; his equally mean and even fatter mother we called “Suffocating Buffalo”, which was a reference to what would happen if she was to sit on one. snicker I think I’ll take a new handle of “Dances with Fipples”. silly giggle

----Bonnie <— is bored today…bear with her!

What kind of name quest vision would lead someone to choose the name “Vermifuge the Red”?

Vermifuge the Red was a dragon in one of my novels–rather a nasty critter, and I eventually wound up killing her off, but I still kinda liked her.

There certainly seem to be a lot of professional authors here. Can you give me some titles of your work?

“Professional” = someone who is published, which I am not. A swift series of strokes separated me from my editor/agent (who also happened to be my mother), and I’ve only just now started poking around for another…

You always hurt the ones you love! :boggle:

I was recently part of a round-robin parody in which we created a HUGE dragon with about a 50-meter wingspan and a head like T-Rex. Despite these attributes, she was a vegetarian, only breathed fire to locate safe landing areas while flying at night, and was actually quite a sweetheart. One of the other participants named her “Tallulah”.

Reinforcing what Vermifuge says…being a writer is not necessarily the same as being a paid author. Can be an avocation rather than a vocation.

Well… once you get published maybe you will get a new name, “Vermifuge the Read.”

Vermifuge is, admittedly, a very cool name. But without the accompanying dragon pic, it conjures up an image to me of a centrifuge in which you spin down worms into their component parts.

Vermifuge… have you tried Cafe Press? You can have novels printed and Bound by them… I’m also a Writer… Maybe we can Team up and Become the new Wise/Hickman Duo  I’m working on a Celtic bassed fantasy novel… unfortunately everytime I save it to floppy, and forget to double save on my hard drive, the floppy gets messed up and I have to remember what i wrote for 30 pages or so. Currently I have 120 pages written not including the Prologue… I once sent the manuscript to TOR (Publishes The Wheel of Time series, among others) Unfortunately I accidently sent the wrong draft Oops… So of course they declined…

This could be an interesting topic. Those of us struggling to hang on to “writer” as a self-definition, without the externally-awarded legitimacy of a paid book contract.
(Another source for “publication” being Xlibris.com…more expensive than when I had my first book done…I’m planning on my current project being actually marketable.)

As for GaryKelly, et al… I invite you to stand on the sidelines and feel superior.

Yup yup, for now, I’m Vermifuge the Unread. laughs!!

Ages ago, when I used to game, my group was harrassed over an extended (and nerve-wracking) period by an exceptionally wicked green dragon called Chloroseptis; his name kinda-sorta inspired Vermi’s. The “Vermi” part refers to “vermin”–I was thinking “worm” at the time (aka “wyrrm”).

I thought it’d be fun to make Vermi benevolent in her first appearances–twice, she’s an important source of knowledge, and in another, she and a silver show up unexpectedly to help sway a crucial battle–but in the (wierd) lil world I’ve created, as dragons age, there is a small chance they will “go rogue”: lose their minds completely and go on a rampage (munching towns, etc.) instead of retiring peacefully to the grave.

From the outset, folks know Vermi has the same chances as any other to wig out when she’s old. The main characters find it a horrible task when forced to hunt down and kill one of their best friends.

Yep, ya always kill the ones you love.

Ohhh, yeah, Cafe Press…I just signed up with them to peddle t-shirts and posters. I’ll look into the publishing thingee–I had no idea they did stuff like that. I need to pay more attention when I read! grin

The Count: So why did you pick a dragon for your online persona?
Vermi: 30 years spent at 5’3" and 130 lbs. chuckle

A vermifuge is a medical agent which serves to expel parasitic worms from the gut. Just to clear things up.

Now I understand…

Slan,
D.

Yeah, my best friend pointed that out to me a year or so ago. She calls me “Wormie” now. LOL

Well if you had published I would have checked one of them out. Just like Gary Kelly’s book I hope to get this week. I would like to think I helped support other chiff and fipplers.
