Name That Low D (Mystery Solved!)

Here are four clips, recorded on four different Low D whistles. Who can name them?

To make it fair, they are all the same tune. As a special tribute to lollycross, I have used Sheebeg Sheemore (pronounced Sí Bheag Sí Mòr). If you get annoyed by the time you listen to the fourth clip, that’s my fault, not O’Carolan’s.

I’ll give you just one hint: One of the low D’s is an Overton (none-tunable; matters for the sonic fribrulator nodes).

Winner may get a prize (then again, the winner may not get a prize).

Good luck! :slight_smile:

The guessing is over. Here is the solution of the puzzle:

Mystery Low D “Aarhus” Kerry Low D (black plastic fipple, aluminum body)

Mystery Low D “Brisbane” Alba Low D (curved blade, smily fipple plug)

Mystery Low D “Calgary” Shaw Low D (tweaked by Jerry Freeman)

Mystery Low D “Dubai” Overton Low D (Colin Goldie, 2002)

Here is a picture of my whistle collection (most of them, anyway), with some guest whistles thrown in. You can see the Low Ds on the left.

From the left: Overton low D, Alba low D, Kerry low D, Chieftain low E (I had it on loan), JerryTweaked Shaw low D.

Um. I think one might be a Overton Low D.

Number 1 and 2 sound almost identical to me… I’d say #3 is an Alba and #4 an Overton. No clue as to the others. :confused:

Then again… I listened a second time and I’m not sure about ANY of them any more. Still think #3 is an Alba.

Hi Bloomfield,
I must say I enjoyed that, even if it did take me 20+ mins to download them. I haven’t a clue what the 1st 3 are, they all sound pretty much the same, I’d say they’re all straight bore. “Dubai” I think might be a Copeland, it sounds the most balanced over both octaves and not breathy. It won’t surprise me if I’m wrong though, :laughing:

Cheers, Mac

Mac, thanks for d/l’ing! Thanks to you & Patrick for taking the plunge here and venturing a guess. I won’t say if either of you is right or wrong, but I think this is going to be fun. :slight_smile:

See, to me, there is a marked difference between 3 and all the others: it is much, much breathier (which is why it reminds me of my Alba). 1 and 2 sound exactly alike to me, but 3 sounds nothing like them to my ear. I do agree that 4 sounds the most balanced and this is why I had picked it as the Overton. Gee, what TORTURE!!! Thanks A LOT, Bloo! :boggle:

Right, here goes again, I’ll stick with “Dubai” as Copeland. I think “Calgary” is the Overton, sounds powerful, of course maybe the mic was sneaking up on you!!

Cheers, Mac

Fwiw, I think the Overton is 3 or 4 too. I’m too embarrassed to say what I think 1 is.

Carol

i’m always fond of a little gamble, though i’m not very at home with aluminium whistles. (i’d a better change if they were all burkes)

aarhus:overton
brisbane:overton
galgary:copeland
dubai:alba :confused:

one of them sounded like a howard, the 4th one sounded like a susato

Brilliant idea for the “summer hole” (Sommerloch, which we call the time when everything even the politics gets boring quiet and everyone is looking for a good/or entertaining headline)

:smiley:
Brigitte

P.S. When I read the guesses I am wondering if everybody is reading the numbers from the downloads and not the order they are written in as it is different?

I don’t have a low whistle. (yet :wink: ) I’ve never even played one, but I’m going to give it a try anyway.
Aarhus- Overton
Brisbane- Shaw
Calgary- Copeland
Dubai- Alba

I’m probably completly wrong, but what the heck? :smiley:

Hi Brigitte,
quite right,
Aarhus = Download LowD2
Brisbane = Download LowD1
Calgary = Download LowD4
Dubai = Download LowD3

Cheers, Mac

I provided the silly city names to make guessing easier (they’re double randomized). Like Alcona just did.

I am thinking that I’ll give some more hints tomorrow. Maybe I’ll list a few low Ds that aren’t represented in my sample… :slight_smile:

Wild guesses…

A- Overton
B- Chieftain
C- Susato
D- :confused:

As the reigning champ of “Name That Whistle” (unless I’ve missed a round since winning the crown last year) I regret to say that I don’t have access to a PC with audio at the moment, so I won’t be able to participate - Geeze, I’ll never match Lance now :laughing:

Loren

Gosh…that rogue mouse chewed my speaker cables clean through. So, sniff, no prizes this end either… :frowning:

Trisha

A – Susato

B – Howard?

C – Alba

D – Overton

It’s really tough to judge these by a recording played over computer speakers. I have trouble telling my own whistles apart with pretty good recording and playback equipment. Honestly no idea what B is.

Good test, Bloom – when do you grade the papers?

Having no speakers at the moment and therefore no ability to join in the great fun, I shall use my highly advanced brain (HA!) instead of my ears to come to the neccessary conclusions…

#1. they are all whistles

#2. this is bloomfield

#3. there is an overton in the mix

Using only one fact (#2) I have used my highly advanced brain and came to the conclusion that since this test has been presented by bloom “overton lover” field, they must be all overtons!!! HA! beat that sherlock homes!!!
