OK, can you name the whistle that goes with the finger spread?
HINT EDIT: The bell of the whistles is to your right. ![]()
HINT EDIT 2
: Yes, they are all Low D’s
Some should be easy, others, good luck.

Yikes!! I need more than luck…I think more coffee this rather chilly AM would help at least a bit! ![]()
Heather
Are they all the same key? Low D? There’s a susato in there for certain, as they’re the only ones who still can’t seem to master the fine art of round finger holes!
No I can’t, at this time of day, all I can do is name the fingers ![]()
I suspect they are all Low D’s which I don’t own one.
Is there a prize involved? Our pick of your whistles?
That’s quite a collection!
MarkB
The first is a Jubilee Practice whistle.
The 6th is a Susato.
The 7th a Dixon.
The 8th a Weston.
The others I am not sure.
OK how close am I?
Ron
Is #2 a chieftain?
#7 looks more like a Howard
Ron, 3 out of 4.
Kuranes, edit: 1 out of two, Close (closer than you might imagine
).
Regardless, this is a good way to get a feel for finger spread when choosing a Low D.
Id the top either a Hoover or a Water Weasel? I’ll take the stab and go with Hoover.
There also looks to be an Overton and a Chieftain unless I’m highly mistaken. Couldn’t tell you which is which though without the mouthpieces of course. Will a headjoint quiz be next weeks extra credit? ![]()
#2 is probably an Overton, then – they have very similar finger spreads on the low half (I have a Chieftain Low G and no Overtons (
) , so I just thought chieftain to begin with)
#5 also looks a bit like a Kerry
That makes 2 an Overton and 7 an O’Riordan. I have neither in low D
Trisha
7’s NO O’Riordan unless Pat’s gone and completely changed his design on his low whistles. He uses a very distinctive tuning joint between the E and F# holes. Can’t miss it.
Brian, I did say I didn’t have one…so if it isn’t Howard or O’Riordan, who else does black anodised?
And Kuranes posted while I was composing so that was simultaneous Overton votes ![]()
Trisha
Did he tell us it wasn’t a Howard? I own one of those too and that would be a viable guess I would think.
#4 is the only one there that could be an Alba, but it’s difficult to say.
There have been correct answers for all but #3. I actually don’t recall anyone venturing a guess on it so.
Hint #3 is:
Now this one might be a little difficult to get because it is a one of a kind or at least only a couple were made from a single, odd piece of material this smith had lying about his shop. If you think about it, there is only one whistle maker that I know of that make whistles from a number of very odd items.
Kuranes, I edited my first response to you. Sorry if it was misleading.
#3 must be the Hoover ski pole whistle
That would be quite a feat to get a low D out of a 1/4 inch ski pole tube.
But you are right it is a Hoover whistle.
Warning, the answer is posted below, just in case you want to still try to guess without looking!
So, here is the list:
Jubilee Practice
Overton
Hoover (made from a stainless steel shower curtain rod)
Alba
Kerry
Susato (holes give it away every time)
Howard
Weston
Sorry, no prizes for this one. The only one I currently own of that set is the Overton. The Weston is on tour and will be raffled to the participants.
