I still love all my old guys Keenan, Spillane, Dillon, McSherry, O’hare…
but I was just turned onto (finally) Lunasa. I had no idea. OK I know everyone is saying… where you been dude, in a jar or something, did you know Elvis died???
Sorry, I had never heard them or Cillian Valely. Maybe I had but didn’t know it. HE IS AWSOME!
BTW how do you pronounce his name, like Killian and Val-A-Lee?
That is correct Cillian made his Lunasa debut on “The Merry Sisters of Fate” I love Lunasa. They inspired me to pick my Flute back up. Now I have to have a set of Pipes but alas I cannot afford one.
Michael McGoldrick also played with them in the early days. I think that there’s a piece on Merry Sisters in which MMcG and JMcS play together. Or it could be on another CD.
Either way, they’re still a great group. They do crazy arrangements, which only they can seem to make work. More power to them.
Cillian is a brilliant piper, and excelent teacher. He pronounces his last name, like you said, Val-A-lee. Great muscian, and a really nice guy as well.
I’ve been interested in finding out more about the New Zealand Tionol that will be held between June 4-7th. It looks like it will be one of last such gatherings in the Southern Hemisphear for a while. One of the guest pipers is Cillian Valley. I’d be interested in attending. The problem is the website that NPU supplied was not correct. If anybody has Greg Waite’ email address it’d be much aprecheated.
Cillian is a nice fellow, and I like his playing a great deal. We were blessed to have both Cillian Vallely and Kieran O’Hare at the 2004 Florida Tionol. He played (upon request) Colonel Fraiser’s in class, and I was nearly blown out of my seat when he switched on the drones the second time through it. Mighty piper is he.
