I just saw Lunasa in Boston. Man, they were smokin’! First time I’ve seen them.
Before I saw the show, I was talking to a friend, telling him how much I love the band, and how psyched I am to see them live, because though I loved their albums, I thought they were slightly over-produced in their sound, and he said
“Have you ever seen them before?”
I said “No.”
He said “Dude, that’s how they sound LIVE.”
He was right. The only band I’ve ever seen live that rivals how tight they were is John Zorn’s klezmer/jazz quartet Masada. Lunasa is unbelievable. I had a blast watching and listening. Kevin Crawford is really quite the entertaining front-man…and he obviously gets a big kick out of it. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait for their next album.
Specifically, Cillian is really the picture-perfect example of the relaxed piper. There he is, rolling along, shredding like a madman, and he looks more relaxed than I am reading a book.

PS: I posted this on the Irish Trad board, but if anyone has a source for the Stack of Rye, let me know - online, or on an album. It’s a Crehan tune.
