If I have it down right, John has played with Lunasa on their first CD, and has and possibly IS touring with them currently. And to my delight, upon watching “Waking Ned Devine” and taking the time to read the credits, I see that he also played for the soundtrack of that movie.
Simply put, I thouroughly enjoy his piping, and would love to know if he’s doing any more with Lunasa, or solo projects that anyone’s aware of. I thought I heard a rumor that he posted to this board a while ago too.
Last I heard John is alive and well, and playing in a variety of venues, although he is no longer with Lunasa (Cillian Vallely is playing the pipes for them now).
I’ve always really liked his piping too, and he recently released a great new album with Mike McGoldrick called “At First Light.” It’s been a regular inhabitant of my CD player for about three months now–lovely playing from both of these Lunasa alums.
In looking at John’s site, it doesn’t look like it’s been updated since 2000. I thought there was another thread on this board recently about someone who had the chance to meet John, and Mike McGoldrick too…but I can’t remember right off…
Hi Brian,
John McSherry is playing in Donal Lunny’s band Coolfin (Album name-Coolfin) I’m sure I saw on Martin Preshaw’s site that he made a set for John, I don’t know if he play’s them exclusivly though. I was fortunate enough to see John and Mike recently, search under McSherry & McGoldrick.

I had the pleasure of meeting and sitting through the night with john and mike at wicklow 2000. johns chanter playing is taking the instrument to a new level. I wish he would record the kinda music he was playing that weekend. anyone else heard john “going for it”?.

Where do you call home? I was in Wicklow at the 2000 Johnny Doran Tionol as well…Mighty playing by John and others, most of which I still have on minidisc (including John and Mike McGoldrick playing a barn-burning version of “Liz Carroll’s” together). Perhaps you and I might have played a few tunes at some point?
