My Chance to Buy an O'Riordan

I just got a chance to buy an O’Riordan D/C convertable set for the smashing price of $150.00 . I already own Three Burkes C,D A and a Copeland Low D. Is it worth it?

pkaasa

Absolutely. From everything I’ve heard, they are some of the best whistles made, and they are getting hard to find.

If they are in good condition, you could turn right around and re-sell them at a profit if you wind up not liking them.

–James

No it’s definitely not worth it.

BTW, would you mind PM-ing me the contact details of the person who made you the offer? :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with Wombat, only send ME the details… :stuck_out_tongue:

Not on your life! Not until I get a chance to try them.My chequebook is cringing already. Oh well, I can always live without a stove and refrigerator. If I do change my mind, I will pass the info around.

Wood or Aluminum?

You’d better grab them up either way. You’ll likely never see those at that price again. The wood ones go for over $600 plus sometimes on eBay.

The one I’m going to hopefully grab is wood.

DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!

The closest I ever got to an act of criminality was trying to figure out how to get nancy F’s alum. set into my possession by any means necessary .:smiling_imp: She also has a brass set that is VERY nice but the alum was just a bit better.

They vary a bit, but are the most compelling whistles I ever played. I just wanted to play on and on with em.. It still amazes me that something so simple as a whistle can vary so much from builder to builder. ORiordan has figured out a very wonderful formula and mastered it in duplication.
I kept staring at its fipple, wall thickness, diameter, etc trying to figure out what combination of design elements were responsible for its tonal success.

It’s like fine violins and other handmade instruments. Some makers just have the magic touch. Their creations are wonderfully distinctive in their appearance and function. If we’re lucky, something like that crosses our paths once in a while, or maybe ends up in our posession while we’re here.

I’ve never played Pat’s wooden whistles, but I have the aluminum Traveler G and Low D, and am on the waiting list for a soprano D and Bflat Traveler. The Low D is excellent and the G is truly magical."
I’d go for it.

I’ve played a few and weren’t really taken with them. Diff’rent strokes.

But, at $150, grab them. Play them for a few weeks, and then if you need a refrigerator (rancid food is underrated  ), sell them on ebay at a 300% profit.

There are several people I’ve spoken with over the years who have not been overly impressed with them - kinda like me and Jaguars (the cars). But if someone offered me one for a thousand bucks, you BET I’d buy it and then if I didn’t love it myself, I could easily expect to sell it for what I paid or even more. These whistles would be a great investment for you either way I should think…
