Movies which I watch about once a year: A post by DaleWisely

  1. Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  3. Pulp Fiction
  4. Blade Runner
  5. Twelve Angry Men
  6. This is Spinal Tap
  7. Magnolia
  8. The Shawshank Redemption
  9. Punch Drunk Love
  10. Lost in Translation
  11. Apollo 13

The stage version of 12 Angry Men came through Baltimore last year. One of the best productions I’ve ever seen.

I will not list the movies I watch repeatedly. It is to laugh.

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird. That kind of character in people is so rarely seen in movies nowadays.

I don’t like to watch movies more than once.
However, embarrassingly:

Legally Blonde
The Devil Wears Prada

Glad you mentioned this movie. The Shawshank Redemption is one of the few movies that I can watch everytime I see it on television and I’ve worn it out in VHS. As far as rewatchability, I’d give it an A. One can rarely say that about even the greatest of films.

I can’t limit it to ten. I watch many movies, but when I really like something I tend to glom onto it and watch it over and over … and over … and over .. and …

For some reason I love ‘Spanglish’ and watch it every time it’s on.

(I think it’s because of the woman)

Also, I watch ‘Heaven Can Wait’ every time it’s on.

The Green Mile

Raising Arizona

Arthur

The Wizard of Oz

A Christmas Story

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf (my all time favorite)

The Keep

The Hunt for Red October

Apollo 13

Cast a Deadly Spell

An American Werewolf in London

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (the 1982 version)

POTO, hehe.

I haven’t been to a walk in movie theater since 1965 when my new (and still) wife and I saw The Endless Summer and Tokyo Olympiad. However, I still choke up through Ikiru and watch, with various degrees of interest, many of the films noted above.

I even bought the DVD of A River Runs Through It after reading just about everything Maclean wrote. I like it. A lot. I blew it when my dad tried to teach me flyfishing all those years ago and I didn’t take him up on it.

In The Mood For Love
Chungking Express
High Fidelity
Blade Runner
City of God
The Last Emperor
Animal House
The Red Violin
Saudade do Futuro (one of the greatest films about music ever)
Breathless
Shallow Grave
Monty Python & The Holy Grail
24 Hour Party People
Pretty In Pink
Ran

Now that they are mentioned:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Raising Arizona

And I wasn’t even going to say that. 4 times in the theater and several with the girls at home is enough for now. There is another thread down there somewhere which holds a clue.
(I’d consider something that shows Gerard Butler’s whole face though.)

The Hunting Party (with James Mason)

:boggle:

The only one that comes to mind when this topic comes up is Black Orpheus, Orfeo Negro. Just the music is worth the price of admission. It also gives a glimpse into the collision of European and African culture that was Brazil in the 1960s.

I don’t own a functioning TV, so I don’t repeat many movies. The exceptions are:

Dr. Strangelove. I show this to my history students the day after their AP exam every year.

Lord of the Rings. . . . once a year or so I get the itch.

I watch Field of Dreams and Bull Durham whenever they are on, despite the fact that Kevin Costner is in them.
